OK, so I have 2 decent knives and would like to keep them in tip top condition, what type of sharpener should I be looking for?

The knives in question are a Kershaws Design: Needs Work and a Gerber Powerframe.

Budget of about £20 or so?? Don't know how much for something good?

Thanks in advanced?

Get some whetstones of varying grits and learn how to use them properly. Better than anything else you will find and will last 1000x longer.

One of these in 1000/6000 is a good starter japanese water stone. You can probably find it cheaper elsewhere, this is an expensive store.

After a while you will also need to invest in a decent diamond stone to true up the water stone as the material they're made from is very soft.

You can put a razor sharp edge on a blade using these, you should be able to shave the hair off your arm as a test. But it takes a lot of practise.

Are these 'kitchen' knives, or something else?

For general sharpening I'd recommend wet & dry sand paper on a flat base - use progressively finer grits. A very sharp knife can be maintained for under a tenner. This is one cheapo method described on the bushcraft uk forums 'sharpening kit'.

I have one of these http://www.heinnie.com/product.asp?...&strPageHistory=search&numSearchStartRecord=1 DC4 - a great bit of kit, followed by stropping on leather.
Mind you, my knives are skandi grind blades, so there's no secondary bevel to speak of, which simplifies the problem of sharpening greatly.
