So,

I am getting fed up with Arch.

I ahve been running it about 2 years, and recently I have found that the RR policy is just playing havock with my system- Samba is broken now, I get an error about Compiz when booting, I get all kinds of X server problems that I have fixed by softlinking because frankly I just want to get on with my work and not arse around with the guts of the OS.

I work with Solaris day in day out (and it's great, but I spend a lot of time fixing software installs on there, etc), so don't want my home PC to be a pain in the arse too..

I am thinking of moving away, but want something I can customise from the ground up, has good support forums, is lightning quick, and lite as a feather as standard, and has RELIABLE updates!

Am thinking Debian or OpenSolaris at the moment Any thoughts?

Debian is the way to go.

I have used Arch but their attitude is holding back Linux, IMHO. I found it very frustrating and in the end moved to something a little easier. Debian will allow an experienced user to mold their system into whatever they want without things breaking every 5 minutes yet not be a complete noobfest.

Debian it basically works like arch as in it's feather weight as standard but it won't break when you update.

Downside They use very outdated stuff.

Debian is good, should fit the bill with what you need, but currently iv got a big problem with it (and most linux distros in general) for not being good with WPA wireless and debians fairly average docmentation on qute a few areas (things like xorg graphics drivers basically saying "yeah urm it'll pick the good one for you... urm kthanxbye").

I personally like gentoo (as anything that actually gets to the main portage tree is well tested, though portage its self seems to be a bit stale to me right now..). Open solaris is a hoot too, though a bit weird.... Best advice is give debian a go for now :)

If you don't want to mess around then install either Debian or Ubuntu.
Whichever one you pick though make sure you will have a working network during the install.
If you don't it's annoying to scan the net on how to sort stuff out afterwards.

I did have a bad experience recently with Debian but that was due to only having a wireless dongle during setup. (which had no driver and the cd had no build tools) Hence my advice above. :)

Re: Pingwing, I didn't have any WPA probs once I sourced the proprietary blob for my dongle.
Was using WPA2/CCMP with zero probs on Lenny.

Ah cool, i wasnt really going for the zomygodz it never works angle, it was just something i havnt yet sorted out propperly. Im pretty convinced it shouldnt be too hard to spot what i forgot but ill sort it another day...

Is there no 686build of Deb? Will the i386 one be much slower than Arch?

And this is a really n00b question, but there seems to be an IA64 version- does will this work with my Intel E6600 processor? Is this perhaps the one to get?

Thanks
