Spec me a Mac Pro

Add the 2nd 1TB yourself, get a 300Gb Veloci as a boot drive.

Just been looking at the HDD upgrade prices and they're astronomical. £80 to upgrade you from a 640GB to a 1TB, and a whopping £240 to add another 1TB. You can buy 1TB drives from OcUK yourself for £60! Definitely not worth upgrading those via Apple, rather spend the money on quicker HDDs or SSDs if you're desperate to spend it at all.

As for the graphics card, there's that new EVGA GeForce GTS 285, but at £370 it's not really worth it just for the sake of about 5 extra frames per second over the Radeon. Might be worth looking around to see if anyone's managed to extract the firmware/BIOS from the card though, that way you could just flash it onto a much cheaper PC card and get the same benefit.

Just a thought, i thought the Veclioraptors don't fit in the MP Cages (they didnt used to in the 08)

im learning towards the Qaudcore 2.66 now.

with 2x1TB WD Black drives

just saw ur post above, that makes perfect sense but surely witin the next year or two the apps should be better multicore aware so in 2 years the 2.26 would pull away?

on the other hand i could buy another new MP

Well if they do then you buy a new one, MPs hold their value pretty well.

And yes they do fit, I have one fitted... you just need the server version which is £20 more expensive lol :/

I have:

300Gb Veloci
2x 1TB WD
1x 1TB Hitachi 7k1000

I just played around...

Two 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
12GB (6x2GB)
640GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB
Two 18x SuperDrives
Apple Mighty Mouse
Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (British) and User's Guide (English)
AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi Card with 802.11n
2 x Apple LED Cinema Display (24" flat panel)
EMEA CC-HE contract uplift Mac Pro (Applecare)

Order Total £4,580.45

That'll do me!

With the spare £400 or so I'd buy hard drives. Sorted.

I think we'd all love a spec like that Feek :p

Im determined in 2012 when I graduate to buy myself the best Mac Pro there is.

Im guessing its going to be some 25/32nm 16 core, 32 thread 3.5Ghz BEAST \o/

If you can afford it do it.

But can you afford that AND a better SLR AND better glass.

The latter of which is more important IMO.

£1600 is what my 40D + Grip + 17-55 USM IS cost me. Best combo IMO.

I really don't think that is £1600 better off, in few years when you come to upgrade/replace it. That £1,600 will go a LONG way.

ive decided on somthing similar to:

  • One 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
  • 8GB (4x2GB)
  • 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
  • 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
  • ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB
  • Two 18x SuperDrives
  • Apple Mighty Mouse
  • Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (British) and User's Guide (English)
  • AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi Card with 802.11n
  • AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac Pro (w/or w/o Display) - Auto-enroll
  • Purchase Information
with some extra parts for my camera + Hoilday money (going away in a week or so) :D

Seriously, buy your own HDDs. Paying £240 for Apple to install a £60 HDD is just silly. It's not like the Mac Pro is difficult to upgrade.

thanks guys,

i bought myself a new lens for my D60 I got a Tamron 17-50mm :D unsure when ill order my mac pro might order it once im back from hoilday :)
