Spec me a: MacBook Pro ALTERNATIVE

No, I'm gonna be carrying it to school every day for 2 years of Sixth Form, along with all the text books etc etc
...needing to keep it for 2 years is why the option to <in the future> upgrade to 4gb RAM is nice, and why 802.11n Wi-Fi is also a requirement. And also, seeing as my current desktop is 3.0ghz dual core, I'd want the laptop to have the fastest CPU possible (wheras in a desktop I'd get the lower down CPU and overclock it!)

Oh, rules out the FZ then. Only lasts about 80 minutes :D

Our sixth form common room does have plugs, but they are in very short supply, hence why aslong battery life as possible is a must (though ofcourse Apples 6hrs claim is "up to", and wont be for gaming!)

EDIT: Am I allowed to mention the word "gaming" in a thread that has the word "Apple" in it? :p

You'll struggle to find a powerful notebook with a long battery life. It's not even the screen which eats the energy, it's the sheer power demand of the CPU/GPU.

In Apple's defense the new Macbook Pro is supposed to have excellent battery life, so perhaps it's worth a shot? One of the reasons I didn't get an Apple is I didn't want to make the switch. Not because I dislike OSX, but because I've got so many Windows applications which I'm used to working with.

Very good point

I don't need the battery life for when I'm gaming/photoshopping, just when I'm doing boring school work!

Well my entire OSX experience is using Safari in an Apple shop, as I was on holiday and needed to check emails :D
Tbh, the reason I made this thread is that I'm not sure about making the switch, though having said that, there is Bootcamp!

Seriously though I carry my 2.7Kg laptop up a huge hill everyday to 6th form. It isn't exactly a struggle, don't take the quoted battery life from Apples website, as the manufacturers website doesn't tend to be very accurate. ;)

You don't really buy an Apple for the hardware. You buy it for the user experience in the OS and applications which is different from using Windows. If your not interested in that part it, then its just a stylish pricey laptop.

If you want long battery life, pick latest but slowest CPU's. no gfx, and a smaller screen. On a Dell 640 I used to get 6~7 hrs on a 9 cell battery. I assume the Vostro 1400 is much the same. The battery life on the current range of Dells Insprions and XPS's doesn't seem to be as good. I've a 9400 which a 7900GS and it gets 2/2.5 hrs on a 9 cell battery.
