This should be a challenge...

Budget is £500

No need for gfx - onboard graphics or a cheap £15 jobbie will do !

No need for cdrom/floppy

Components needed

Edit: Oops forgot the CPU : 1xq6600 needed

RAM ideally 2gig but might be happy with 1gig if it aids stability.

Good overclocking motherboard.

2 Small but fast disks in raid0.

Good cooling.

Case/PSU

Thermal paste

Assuming you've already got the CPU then this should do it, you might not need the PC8500 as PC6400 would give you the required 400mhz (and most will do more) which combined with the 9x multiplier gives you 3.6ghz on the nose but the faster Ram might help a little if you wanted to keep the multiplier lower.

The above spec can be changed as it doesn't have EVERYTHING you asked for...

It has a single 500GB HDD as this would be better value for money at least than two 160GB's in raid... I don;t think there would be a noticable speed difference really either and you get loads more space for the same amount of money... That's all my thoughts though, for the same price as the 500GB you can have two 160GB's in Raid.

The Mobo isn't the best and im not sure how high it would clock the Q6600 to but comes with on-board grpahics saving you some money...

IF you wanted a better mobo you could sacrifice HDD space, not having a modular PSU & a worse CPU cooler...

what are you planning on using this pc for? could perhaps save money or direct you in a better direction if we knew. Im guesing its something which is heavy on cpu like decoding and your not a gamer?

You can save money gettig the corsair 450w because you wont need anywhere near 520w also you can save money on the fans by getting the sharkoons which are very quite and push a lot of air. They also have more fins and are better at pushing air through obstructions like cables or air filters because of it.

Yeh it will be a number cruncher to add to the farm so I'll need a few of them hence the reason why I want it for as cheap as possible. So yes it will be crunching stuff like seti or doing 3d rendering
 
I've re-jigged the whole lot since you need a CPU and I realised that I hadn't included a graphics card the first time (although there was space in the budget). It has a single hard drive but a very quick one, a better case but other than that should perform about the same.

Ok then. Currently got a spec in the making but what sort of number crunching? if they are small files you may not need raid as you might not see any real improvement. if its big filse and a lot of accessing the hard drive raid may help but you are risking 1 hard drive dieing and losing it all. To be honest if you got multiple pcs goig and this is important data perhaps having it go to a server would be better with raid 5 or 10 on it. But im not sure how they would impact the speed of them if at all.

Also I would suggest you shopping around. Some places will give you free delivery for being memebers of their forums and have good prices on products to boot and when ordering a lot of stuff free delivery is handy.

Looking at the asbove spec with the modifications of the 450w instead etc not sure of many changes actually to what i would do. i would get the 2400 graphics card as its cheaper.
 
how many pc's are you building and is it a workspace for lots of people or when you say number crunching are they just doing lots of complex calculations 24/7? Im intreeged as to what job it is you do lol. This isn't for folding is it? lol.
 



You say it's going to be used mainly for seti etc...

Tried to make everything as cheap as possible..

You could get a smaller HDD but won't save loads.

The PSU is apparently ok, same wattage as the Corsair but saving a bit more cash.

Not to sure on how good the case is but again, trying to keep costs down.

Basicly you have everything you need there but have an extra £50 to go out and get drunk or make the spec better in a few places ;)
 
zen's airflow wont be enough for the job i dont think at 3.6 and how dare you consider putting that chav-tastic heat sink in a pc! lol. Also i think the extra quid spent on the next mobo up would be adviceable. ive been out of the loop for a while and know nothign of those cheaper mobos but i wonder if they arn't build for overclocking as when i look at the ds4 i cant see how they can make them much cheaper they are cracking boards for the price.
 
reviews show the tuniq tower to perform not as well as the thermaltight ultra 120 extreme. and if clocking a quad core your gonna want to get the best air cooling u can get your hands on.
 
the reviews show the tuniq tower with a stock fan and a thermaltight ultra 120 extreme with a top end fan. The reviews also show the difference to be 2 or 3 degrees. i dont ahve the link any more because its a new pc however. But the graphs have been showed around a lot.

There is hardly anythign in it and it doesn't warrent the price difference. Overclocking to 3.6 isn't going to put you over the heat boundary with a tuniq and its not going to be much difference to the thermalright.

Like I said, Not to sure about the case and temps. All I know is that it has a 120mm on the front and back.

As to the mobo, im not to sure if it would make the 3.6ghz but I don't think it would be far off as all you would need is 400X9 but if the next one up isn't much more go for it!

I only built the PC as cheap as I could while trying to make sure the O/C would be as high as possible for the cheapest... if you catch my drift;):D

If the OP doesn't fancy buying booze with it then he has another £50 to up the mobo, case and cpu cooler... well that's what I would make better.

If you put a better CPU cooler (Thermalight or Tuniq) would the Zen not do?
 
400fbs could be a struggle on lower end boards and some lower end ones have limited overclocking capabilitys like you cant change the north bridge voltages which would mean you will never reach 3.6ghz.

The zen is a budget case. loads of cases have only 2 fans and some are really expensive two. So there must be a difference right? the more expensive ones are of a higher quality materials obiously but they also direct the airflow better one would presume. SOmeone said above that the front fan is veryt badly blocked and i can beleive it at that price. Good case for a budget pc not kickign out to much heat. But a quad at 3.6ghz would be heating that case up badly.
