Overview.

Work hasn't got the server capacity to give me VM's for a test lab, so I'm building my own ultra portable lab for use at home and work.

Requirements.
  1. Portable: It needs to be moved daily in the back of car. As small and light as possible and be able to take a few knocks.
  2. Have the capacity to run up to 8 VM's. (Server 2012R2, SQL, SCCM, 8.1) (note: Not all of them will be turned on at the same time).
  3. Silent: As quite as humanly possible, and dark, no lights that I can't cover up using the old electrical tape. Function over form.

Host OS will be windows 8.1 running VM Workstation 10, with at least 40GB to each VM with space for shared disks like WSUS.

My Hardware thoughts.
16GB Ram minimum, but 32GB capacity with time. (pref with a 16Gb upgrade and not a complete replacement, but will drop this preference for a smaller unit)
3 SSD's. 1 for the host OS, and 2 for the VM's. (I like to keep the VM's on different disks to the host, but again, a preference not a requirement.)
Onboard graphics are fine.

Any idea's people.

Budget? Here's something I did quickly;

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £259.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLD316G2133HC11ADC01) £129.95
1 x Gigabyte Z97N-Gaming 5 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Mini ITX Motherboard £115.99
3 x Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter (CT256MX100SSD1) £79.99 (£239.97)
1 x Corsair Hydro H80i High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler £74.99
1 x Corsair Obsidian Series 250D Mini ITX Compact Gaming Case - Black (CC-9011047-WW) £71.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £49.99
Total : £956.38 (includes shipping : £11.25).

3 SSDs, each 256GB. You could go 1 128GB for the OS (should be more than enough) and a 256GBx2 or a 512GB for the VMs

I don't think there are 16GB single DIMMs for sale, so you'll have to go for 2x8GB. You'll have a problem upgrading though, as there's only two DIMM slots in mITX boards, so you'll have to replace the lot :(

Didn't see a budget on this, is £1000 about right?

You'd need to go Matx to have a chance at 32gb. Maybe a prodigy case maybe good but its a little bigger than the 250d. Though it does have handles..

I may spec something later, but the one above is decent indeed.

Ah, I knew I forgot something. :( sorry.

Yeah, please look at the budget of around £1k.

Also, thanks to both of you for the information.

Its just a sane you can't get a 4 dimm itx board (I know they'll never exist) as its going to look pretty empty in there. But needs must..

The prodigy is a very good case.

just a wee bit overbudget...

smaller case than a prodigy
hex-core x99 build
32gb ram
512gb ssd

the only drawback about the case is that it's expansion slots are half-height. you'll have to bear that in mind if you need to add any pci-e cards

Thanks gents, I'll take a look over the suggestions over the coming week.

Many thanks again.
