So... In news that will probably curl the hairs on some readers chests I have never bought a mattress before... They have all either been given to me second hand or came as part of a furnished property, now I'm moving into an unfurnished place I thought it was about time I bought my own brand new mattress!

I was originally going to buy a £70 job from Argos because I'm a bit of a *****, but have since changed my mind and rather than take a gamble I've decided to spend a bit more, looking through an old forum thread I found this mattress...

Can anyone find a better mattress cheaper?!

The harder the better ;)

I got a tempur mattress just before Christmas and i can safely say its the best thing I've slept on. well worth it in my opinion.

If its more than 2" of mem foam its not worth it and will make you hot. Under 2" then its of no use really.

I personally prefer without foam.

I have bought in Dec i think it was a Restus Savoy divan from bishop beds which was a good price. Very posh and nice.

Avoid silentnight and large manufacturers if possible as they mass make beds so dont put the quality into their things or least thats what someone in the biz says all the time from someone called Tim Deegan.

Should be able to help somewhat.

I have a king size king coil or something with memory foam, apparently it has around 1000 coils. It is awesome and is basically two single beds together.

Don't go too cheap if you can help it. A good mattress will last a long time.

I am buying a new mattress soon aswell.

A few key points I have found from browsing the internet:
- Avoid anything by the silentnight group (silentnight, sealy, rest assured, pocket spring bed company, layezeebeds). Many have found them to be very poor quality recently and failing after a year.
- Be careful when buying memory foam mattresses in terms of the depth of memory form v the foam underneath. The actual memory foam should be about 2"
- If going for a sprung mattress go pocket sprung if you can. More springs doesn't mean better, too many (1800+) can actually be worse as they may be small/weak and prone to failing.
- Try as many beds as possible for as long as possible. Don't be afraid to lie on a bed in a shop for 10+ minutes as you would normally sleep
- Avoid buying mattresses from bed shops if you can. For example the one I plan to order is £550 in furniture village and £315 online.
- Be aware that bed shops use different names for their mattresses, I assume to avoid you buying the same one online cheaper. Note down the exact spec and make of the mattress then look on the manufacturers website for the real model name

Take his advice with a pinch of salt imho. I own one of the beds from his company and it is already starting to fall apart 2 years later.

Something I paid £750 for should last longer than that.

I'm also looking for a new mattress, will probably be going for a memory foam one due to back problems. (sciatica) I've tried out one which is pure memory foam with a smaller layer of foam on top so it's not rock hard like a normal memory foam mattress, it's soft on top and firm underneath. My only concern is that people say memory foam makes you really hot and I hate being hot in the night.

Memory foam blows, it's so hard. And I shift around a lot in bed so when I change position, it's uncomfortable again until it adjusts to my position.

I got a lovely soft pocket-sprung from john Jewish. The softer the better for me in the mattress stakes.

Memory foam wise it's a little more than I want to spend, plus I already have problems with being too hot in bed so don't think a full memory foam mattress is going to do it for me.

Also getting differing opinions on big brands, half are saying go with silent night they're great and half are saying don't... I never realised buying a mattress was such a minefield.

Relaxsans are very hard, the orthosofts are softer. But these are the only mattresses I go for. They also are not sprung, sprung mattresses unless you pay a fortune are rubbish. About £200 for a double.
Thanks I'll look into those.

They don't necessarily make you really hot exactly, it's more the fact it makes it more difficult to stay cool, particularly in the summer months. Chances are you'll be sleeping with the duvet off sooner than you would with a different mattress (e.g. pocket sprung).

I used to own a memory mattress, but have now moved to a pocket sprung one - a) because they are comfy and b) because they are cooler. I will say this though, during the cooler months when staying cool isn't a problem, a memory mattress is lovely and cosy and a really nice place to be.

If you want a firm mattress, Skyfall, stay the hell away from the foam ones. I prefer a firmer mattress and can't stand them. The best thing you can do is to pop over to a bed place and lie down on a few. Ordering from the internet's great and all, but you really wanna test it out since you'll be spending 1/4 of your life lying on it. I recently bought a new mattress from a local place, a bit steep at £300 but it's the comfiest mattress I've ever had, though most people would hate it because it's rock solid :).

personally i wouldnt go miracoil, but pocket sprung. If pocket sprung a spring rating of >2000, and deffo with a memory foam top.

Our recent superking came in at £1600, but it is well wworth it when you think about the amount of time you spend in it, and how it may affect your health if you get it wrong.

Ours was a sealy, we tested Silentnight which were only OK, and also Myers which were a bit naff tbh
