Guys ,

need a media player or mini pc or htpc to play all my hd content , Needs to have streaming capabilites and storage , been looking at wdtv , raspberry pi , not sure what route to go down , most my content is mkv 1080p files from 8gb to 20gb.

Thanks

Well Raspberry Pi will be cheaper, but there is quite a bit of setup involved. If you don't mind that then go for the Pi. However for ease of use the WDTV Live is a great buy. Played everything I threw at it with zero fuss.

Fingers crossed for the raspberry pi. Got mine ordered and I haven't been this excited about hardware for over 15 years.
Can't wait to have a play with it. Just a shame it's gonna be at least 7 weeks coming.

In fact, I think I did a little sexy wee as I was ordering it. Damnit I need some bromide in my coffee... :o

You'll be safe with the Pi, anything over 24GB will saturate the 100Mb/s ethernet port on the Pi and you'll get buffering every 20secs or something.

Still hoping to find a way round this by using the USB port. But not getting very far atm.

Thanks for the replies guys , Just had an email they are upgrading my order to 512mb and it will be here within 3 days , all i want to do with it is put xbmc on to stream my files and have a usb storage device attached to it also , is this easy to set up as i am a complete noob to the pi

Quite. ;)

7 weeks is the estimate from RS. All depends on manufacturing I think.

I fancy pairing it up with a Rii Touch N7, should make a cracking media player I reckon.

I ordered from CPC in the end, they have free postage (doesn't show up as this when you order but is removed from the total before you are charged) and listed the 512MB version instock so with any luck I'll get it this week.

Glad to hear it!

Should be pretty easy to setup, plenty of guides about. Can't really help myself as this is the first Pi I've owned. Quite looking forward to it truth be told.

You blind? :p... Suggest you read my post again...

It is also stated on their site "Free Fast Delivery In stock orders placed before 7pm are dispatched the same day" then goes onto say "Free delivery available in the UK on offers including a R-pi unit or over £45 ex VAT - delivery charge may be visible online, but will be removed prior to dispatch!"

Mate, I am NOT blind, NOR am I stupid.
You categorically stated that shipping would be zero'd just before confirming. True.
But I mentioned the near £6 HANDLING charge (as shown below).

Even a BLIND man can see that shipping is zero but HANDLING is near £6.

EDIT: And this is on top of the fact that the unit is a fiver more expensive here to start with.

I never said you were stupid. Don't put words in my mouth.

Note it says "Timed Delivery Charge" that is for people who pay extra to get it deliveried within a certain time frame.

I never stated that it would be zero'd before confirming, I stated it would be removed before you are charged. You place the order as normal and just before dispatch, they take the funds less the handling charge, which is basically postage.

From their website: "Free Fast Delivery In stock orders placed before 7pm are dispatched the same day" then goes onto say "Free delivery available in the UK on offers including a R-pi unit or over £45 ex VAT - delivery charge may be visible online, but will be removed prior to dispatch!". If you want to be certain, phone them up, many have done so, place the order over the phone and got charged £29.95.

£5 more? Sure, if you want to wait weeks pay the cheaper price, this is the cheapest price I've found with 512MB stock ready to dispatch.

Yeah, suppose I overreacted a bit there. I just didn't take kindly to your "are you blind" jibe.
Anyways, that £5 I saved bought me a "Fuji Secure Digital High Capacity 8GB Class 10 Flash Card". Happy days.

Please God don't let it take 7 weeks. ;)

It was just a bit of friendly forum banter hence the ;)! Sorry if it caused offence.

Well it is 6 weeks now! So going down... :)

Speed, have you tried clocking it to 1Ghz yet?

Mines not arrived yet.

I have a Dune HD Max player and I love it. Plays everything I throw at it. Its the top end machine and out of ur price range but they have some around ur budget.

The Dune HD Lite has some good reviews.

How slick is the interface on your Dune HD Max? My main gripe with the WDTV Live is the interface at times can be slow and clunky.
