Looking to spend around £500.. I've got the PSU and I *think* I've got the case... that's to say I was wondering if my old Coolermaster 201 would suffice as my only fear is that the newer graphics cards of today will be quite a bit longer than those when that case came out.

I also want to game in 1920 res as I have the 28" WS Hanspree monitor. Ideally it would be nice to get playing Microsoft Flight Sim again, reliving those glorious days of my childhood spent playing Flight Sim 98 etc. for hours upon end :)

I've got a Corsair Modular 550w PSU which should be sufficient?

I repair PCs for a living but I need you more knowledgeable people to help me spec up these parts as I am well out of the know with the up to date hardware out these days. Frankly I don't have the time to keep up with it all!

I also need the VGA socket on the back of the graphics card connected to my 17CRT for use with Quake Live.

the GFX card will come with 2 DVI ports, and a vga adapter. Connect it to one of the ports and run the 17" on that, and the 28" on the other.

build:

That CPU cooler won't fit the AM3 socket, it's only designed for intel. Also AM3 doesn't support triple channel memory either, only dual. The AM3 is a good shout for £500 though, just make the changes to the cooler and memory.

thanks,

is that gfx card etc. gonna be able to handle Flight Sim X 1920x1200 res on full graphics?

As for the cooler, i suggest Xigmatek, not available on Overclockers but it is on another similar [/hint] site. Try the S1284C Achilles Edition or the Dark Knight S1283, both around the same price and both are highly recommended, and will handle it easily. Not to mention cheap, and quiet.

i know it would be stretching my budget but i take it the i7 core isn't much more beneficial than that amd phenom atm?

also is a 4890 really better than the 275? i've felt that the nvidia cards seem more solid really, esp when i had the xfx 6800gt, that really was a rock solid card which i liked very much. when i had the 9800 rad pro it was a good card but just didnt seem as 'solid'...

however, the idea of two 4890's sounds appealing, how would this compare to the 295 series?

Two 4890s would blow pretty much anything away. And the intel and phenom are equivilants. They're 'equal' so far as the Phenom is better at most things. Due to it's higher clock speed, it's better at gaming. All i can say about the i7 is that it's overpriced and it is probably better at multi tasking, but in my books that doesn't make it worth it.

hi guys, thanks for your responses, i'm closing in on this buy and should be submitting my order this weekend.

However!!!

I've realised that my Corsair Modular 550W PSU might be insufficient for the needs of the power in these components... should I upgrade this also, don't mind stretching the budget for it.
