Briefly, I`m old-ish, 61, hankering for retirement, current car is a 3 door 65 plate VW Golf GTD 180bhp, all the toys 65,000 miles, fantasic car (imo) £20 per year tax + easily 50mpg.

However, I`m thinking, hankering for retirement and would like to change vehicle now , buy it outright & it will do me 10 yrs, by then I reckon I wont be covering a lot of miles and the next car will probably be a small cheap effort for local commutes.
This is most likely my second last car (gulp), tbh I dont need anything that fast but I`m still alert enough to be overtaking quite a bit & my driving speed is still usually faster than most, that said I don't use my existing car's full performance as I used to as I guess my brain isn't processing as fast :-( .
I`m going round in circles trying to find a car that isn't a significant downgrade from mine, my budget is circa £15k on top of what I get for the Golf (Cazoo offers £12,300), prefer petrol & enough oomph to overtake on straight lines + reasonably comfortable for 300 mile drive or so.

Check out motorway before you commit to WBAC/cazoo. I got 1500 extra.

No comment on car, the markets crazy. Maybe a Golf R? If you can wait it may pay dividends.

I'm thinking I'm too old for Golf R lol , maybe the 150 bhp petrol Golf is best choice.

How’s about an M2 as your swansong?

Whilst lovely, bit decadent & brings a touch of nihilism I'm afraid I'm way too cautious, running costs, age etc.
It seems I'm destined for sensible.

Skoda Superb 280 or maybe Octavia vRS 245 - they're pretty much designed for people who want 'sensible performance' rather than out and out dedicated performance cars.

They'll be plenty comfortable for the commute (the Superb more so), more than enough power for overtaking, can provide a moderately entertaining drive when pushed, fuel economy is sensible and with a bit of shopping around, should happily match or better a 2015 GTD for spec / features.

These are def worth considering

2.0 hybrid Corolla? Not a performance car but 180bhp and 0-60 in 7.8 they are quite nippy
These tick a lot of boxes, great warranty etc, cheaper than a lot of options, looks a bit blancmange tbf tho & certainly would herald my acceptance of decline lol, a contender tho for sure.

Any reason why you've thrown the towel in jim? I mean 61 is the new 40. God forbid you could live another 3 decades.

They look nice in Excel and GR spec in my opinion but I've always been a fan of jap cars. I'm 41 and have been eyeing up the estate version for a while

I see a fair amount of them with blokes my age driving the estates where I live with bike racks etc because they're a solid choice.

Just a bit expensive really compared to a similar Octavia VRS but that won't have manufacturers warranty

Acht I've not really , genuinely I don't feel my age, but reality is that I'm on the cusp of a degree of degradation shall we say. I'm manoeuvring myself into a position where I can retire & just enjoy free time.
That said nothing is set in stone & who knows I might charge off in a more nihilist direction.
