Hey up

Started a new job - and the travel to work is a right pain in the arse, plus the cost pretty much tripled (3 stops further - go figure :( )
They have a cycle to work policy, where you get to pay 50% of the Bike cost, deducted on a 12 month basis off your salary, no interest and tax free.

This is obviously an ideal situation that just begs for me to buy one, but I really have NO CLUE at all what I should be looking for. I know for a fact I dont like those little silly racing bike thingies and have always loved a mountainbike. When I think about it, the idea of me caning it down a mountain sounds great... but it's doubtful I would really go offroading all that much (however having the option to do so would be a bonus).

What would you guys reccomend I buy, or have assembled for me?

MUSt be from Evan's cycles unfortunately, no other bike dealer.

Many thanks :)

edit : £400 - £500MAX

If you're not going off road and want an easy ride to work, dont get a mtb just wasted effort, get either a hybrid or road bike, much easier to ride.

Yup. A hybrid will suit- MTB riding position but with slick or semi-slick tyres. You can whip along faster than when riding on wide knobblies. You don't need suspension either.

Etc.

The Trek looks like a nice bike although rather overspecified for a simple cycle to work, do you have somewhere secure to store it? It looks flashy enough to be attractive to thieves. As has been said though, do put semi-slicks or slicks on if you will be mainly using it for road use and you might also want to make use of the lockout button on the forks, they will still move if you hit something big to stop the seals blowing but normally it goes a lot way to minimising the movement and therefore energy loss.

I found this on the Evans Cycles site - it should be perfect for you, great colour !!
