I need a NAS for my business. Important features:

  • Backup
  • Min 500 GB storage
  • Good performance
  • Security
  • Remote access desired but no essential
  • Vista x64 compatible

The budget is £500 including the HDD's. What do you guys recommend?

Thanks for the replies.

I like the look of the both the QNap and Synology. Anybody who has one have any experiences to mention.

The Seagate drives are out of stock so any alternative suggestions?

Your budget precludes using one of the bigger NAS solutions such as http://www.qnap.com/pro_detail_feature.asp?p_id=85. The bigger ones take 4 or 5 drives and offer different RAID levels (ways of storing the data across multiple disks). Buying cheap for backups maybe an expensive choice.

Also consider what you'll do for offsite backups because a flood, fire or theft can be a disaster for a business. Have a look a www.mozy.com for backup over the internet.

I have off site backups covered with unlimited storage in my hosting package.

I did look at the 409 while researching the 209 but its double the price. I can't stretch that far.

I will be getting either the TS-209 or TS-209 Pro (have not made my mind up yet) in the next few weeks...I personally didn't see the need to get the 7200.11 HDDs over the Spinpoint F1s (even with the 5 year warranty of the 72011s).

If you really want the 7200.11s, I suppose you could always source them elsewhere....:)

I read Samsung - but somehow went looking for Seagate. :o

According to the QNAP forums the WD drives still have spin down issues as well as some models dropping out of RAID!

So that makes the F1's a good choice. I'm in the same boat deciding if I go for the 209 or the 209 Pro. Might have to flip a coin. :p

Something that I read regarding the F1s....you need to do a long format (rather than a "Quick" format) when first installing them.....
