Looking at a few reviews on www.trustedreviews.com and it has got me a bit confused. All i want is a NAS i can stick under my desk that can connect to my laptop and the network in my student house.

Looking for at least 2 slots for HDDs,
iTunes support,
FTP would be a nice thing to play around with.

Nothing else i can think of but my budget is no more than £175 ideally. :)

Edit: Oh and torrent support...not sure how that works though?

The model I would suggest is the Qnap 119, but at you price point only hold 1 disk but you can attach an esta to it as well if you wanted. Fit a Samsung F1 or F3 1TB and your away.

It has all the functions you would want and more. There is a 2 disk version, but that has fans. Look at www.qnap.com for more info. I have the 109pro and I wouldn't do without it now.

You could put together an ION based FreeNAS box on that budget. For that money you won't be able to beat it for performance or versatility with an off-the-shelf embedded device.
You could even stick windows on it and use remote desktop to administrate, that's how I use my 2003 Server. Sky's the limit as to what you do with it then - Teamspeak/mumble server, torrent box, newsgroups, web/ftp servers, anything.
