Hi

I wonder if yous could please give me a hand

I have just bought a WD Live Hub and would like a NAS to serve my media on, I have looked at buying one but they seem very costly for what I am after

I am looking at something like 8TB with raid 5, and gigabit network, I have looked at using Freenas as the OS, what hardware could i get away with using for this?

Thanks very much

u could really get away with any hardware, u dont need much in the way of power

do u have any old pc bits spare u could use ?

essentially all you need is a motherboard with 4 sata ports and a case that can fit 4 drives
a cheap cpu and about 2gb of ram and u'll be sorted.

something like this would be enough

do u care about the looks, noise, power consution, or anything like that ?

preferably i was after something small that i can put out the way, it will be in the bedroom so low noise would be good, what about a raid 5 card??

thanks very much

thanks do you think freenas would work ok with a raid card
What power do you think would be okay and can you recommend a harddrive to go for thanks

thanks looks good can a raid 5 card be added to this okay, with 4 2/3tb drives?? with freenas do you have to have a sata to compact flash adaptor installed to install the freenas software onto??

thanks very much

The MicroServer has an internal USB port that you can use with a USB stick as your boot drive for FreeNAS.

I have came across a Adaptec SATA II RAID 2420SA raid card for a reasonable price would that work okay?
That Adaptec card retails for around twice the price of the server after cashback?

You really don't need to splash out on an expensive RAID controller card; you can just use software RAID included in FreeNAS or any other operating system to achieve RAID 5 :)

thanks

what is the best way to back the freenas config up using USB Stick method?

I can get one of those cards for about £70 so was not sure if that would be a better option that software raid?

thanks

thanks so is it possible to use ZFS with say a raid6 config to provide extra reliability with 4 x 2 TB Drives?

any idea about backing up the FreeNas Config incase the USB Stick packs in?

Thanks

ZFS lets you use RAID-Z to achieve redundancy.

I don't know about backing up the FreeNAS config but it's surely no different to backing up anything else? You could even image the whole USB stick regularly with any number of apps.
