After 5 years, my HTC Desire S is on its last legs. Does anyone have any recommendations for a replacement? I'm looking for something with a good spec, but isn't too big or too expensive. The Sony Z5 compact seems to fit my criteria quite well...

Not sure about budget. No more than £30/month if it was a contract. Is it better to buy sim-free?

Yeah, go sim-free and get something like the Moto G (4th gen) out soon. Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 or a Chinese phone. All for under £200.

If you want to high end phone, Galaxy S7, HTC 10 or even Xperia Z5 are your best bet.

My heart is set on the ZUK Z2 Pro (provided reviews show that it's camera is much better than the OPX).

Guess it depends on hand-size. Going from a 4.3" S4 Mini, I found 5.5" phone incredibly uncomfortable to use (couldn't swipe down the notification bar with my thumb), however 5" is perfect. Provided the overall dimensions are ok, I could probably deal with 5.2" too, small incremental increases wouldn't be as jarring.

My S4 Mini seems so tiny now.

Thanks for the advice. Having said that I don't want a massive phone, I do find it quite frustrating trying to type on the 3.7" screen. I'll go down to my local phone shop and have a play.

Didn't buy a new phone, but instead receieved a free one that my partner was given in a goody bag at work. Specs wise, it is a significant upgrade from my old phone, so I thought it would keep me going for a while. It is an "STK Storm 3". Never heard of them before.

Anyway, I think I expected too much - it's completely useless. The microphone and speaker are rubbish, the battery lasts about half a day, and the back gets REALLY hot.

So I'm back to square one! Tempted to get the Nexus 5X while it's £225.
