Spec me a New Car possible scrappage banter!

Ah...the op has a valid reasoning to his choice and it would be a wise move to spend a few k to save a few hundred. We need people like this who can afford their new cars and finance to get the economy moving again. Please buy it.

By all means if he wants a new car then he can just get on with it, I don't see the point of having to put up with the worst engine in the range for the sake of saving less than £100 a year on tax.

I have a stable job, I already know the loan size, payments per month and it is all budgeted. I am in rented accommodation with my girlfriend and given the housing market we won't be buying anytime soon. I use the car for commuting, it's around 10 miles although I don't know how this is relevant?!

You have a degree and are clearly not James07, so listen to some advice :p

How do you suppose you are going to get on the housing ladder after those few years of 'not anytime soon' have finished ? Start thinking about saving for a deposit, even spending £4k-£5k on very respectable car allows you to save plenty more for a depsoit and not pay back more interest to the bank. Also,do you actually need a new car or replacement car at all, or is it just a 'want', because the Astra does the job perfectly well and gets you too and from work just like a boring little new fiesta would.

If you were talking about something to have fun in then we could understand your logic in upgrading an Astra, and also using this more fun hooning car as your everyday. But from an Astra to a new fiesta, honestly you seem to be acting like those clueless numpties buying new cars for the sake of having new.

Spending £10k on a car and then worrying about tax is daft. Why not spend, say, £6k -£7k on something decent and then you'll be able to afford the increased running costs.

Better yet, why not spend £1k on a Mondeo and go on holiday or something? :p

Think about where you will be in 3 years time and the financial commitment that a new car will bring. Wave goodbye to buying a house as it will knock loads off what a bank will lend you.

Going to be paying a sizable chunk of your income for several years if you buy a new car.

Do you rely on the car to commute to work (do you work?) how many miles a week do you do and what type of driving?

Irrelevant. He won't be able to afford a house in 3 years. Buy the car IMHO.

Exactly this, £10k is a fair bit of wonga to spend on a car, if I was spending this tax is the last thing I would be worrying about! As above get something around the £5k - £7k and just enjoy driving it :)

Ok... would you be happy driving an R-reg Astra when you can afford something better?

The Astra has an MOT due in August/September which if anything like last year is not going to be worth doing, it costs £185 ****ing quid a year in road tax which is robbery and I only get 60-70 miles for £10 worth of petrol which I'm fed up of.

It's also a hunk of absolute ****. The bushings are shot and bent which will soon result in game over car. The wing mirror is held on with duck tape. The steering alignment is off and I've recently had to fit a new starter motor, battery and fuel line. This car is the old horse with a broken leg that needs taken out back and shot.

So yes sir, thanks for your comments on my status but I would like to drive a car that didn't cost me £250 and isn't a pile of *****.

For all interested I think I'll go for the nearly new Focus or similar route. Maybe a Mini but might be a bit small for my other needs.

Why do spec me a car threads on here always turn out into "why don't you go to the scrappy and do up a M-reg corsa for £50 LOL then spend the rest of the money of a motor boat with VTEC yo!?!?

Jesus.

Now you decide to tell us it's a heap of ****, before you only stated:

I'm looking to get a new car! Fed up of student type bangers and stuff so now I'm in stable employment I'd like a new car! I currently have a R reg astra that qualifies for the Scrappage scheme, so obviously I'm considering this.

;)

But you only have a 10mile commute each day.

Plus the tax over x3 years is £555. You might only pay £105 over the same 3 years with this new Fiesta or whatever, but it costs an extra £10,000 (+ interest) to get that £450 saving. Great success in saving there :D

I drive around in a Sunny SR and can afford an E46 M3, but does that mean I am going to buy an M3 (or a brand new fiesta) just for the odd bit of driving around and a short commute each day ? ;)

Why go for such a new car when you could get exactly what you need for a lot less. Our time will come to get a nice car, but what will it achieve now ?

Because he's 24. Don't you know that FTBs are priced out of the market? If houses are cheap in Aberdeen then he might be able to though.

I'm nigh on 24 and saving like hell and will be able to afford a house within 18-24months from now. Granted not everyone is on the same salary, but with some dedication and prioritisation it can be done. Plus I have a pretty active social life in London anyway, so I'm not some recloosy moose :p

Your attitude stinks, were you just expecting everyone to agree with you?

You can actually upgrade without having to spend 10k on a Fiesta. £185 a year is what, £15 a month? It's sod all really. I'd sooner pay 6k for a car and spend another tenner a month in tax than lose thousands a year in depreciation.

Everyone in this thread is speaking sense. Why do people come on to this forum, ask for advice, completely disregard it, and then whinge at us because we're being "rude" or "stuck up" or whatever. If you already know what you want, why make the thread in the first place

Your obviously not bothered about cash, get yourself to carcraft, may be able to get a decent deal / advice there.

I wouldn't be, how much you spent on that??

Just less than £5k over 3 years, after which they can have it back.

I nearly bought an Alfa 156 Sportwagon. I also nearly bought a Saab 9-5 Hot Aero. Then I realised that anything like that would cost me a significant sum on top of £5k over three years, and I really don't need such a big car anymore, or even a quick one. I like the iQ, I think it's cute and fun and something a bit different, and it's the perfect contrast to my Caterham for now. The point is it's a credible alternative to a new Fiesta or similar, if it floats your boat, and it wasn't something I had even heard of until I saw one drive past and didn't know what it was.

Sure, I could've just bought an old Mondeo, or something equally as dull and depressing to live with. But I didn't want to. I hope the OP ends up with something he wants and can enjoy (without being seen to by a dubious finance company), and I hope other people can start presenting some different ideas and alternatives to try and be helpful.

There's a lot of self-righteousness, a lot of meddling and a lot of 'I can run your life better than you can' in this forum. Why is that?

Let me post what OP wants to hear!

Thats great, you have it all mapped out, your choice of car is sublime. I cant do any better. Saving that small amount on tax totally offsets the MASSIVE amount you are paying to buy a new car.

Go on, buy the fiesta, its perfect for you...

Can I ask what an £11k Fiesta is going to do for you that a £6k Focus won't? Presuming finances aren't the issue then you are buying a boring boring boring car for £11k. It will new for 6 months. Then it'll be a second hand Fiesta. That is costing you a lot of money a month. If you're spending £11k on something 'not a student banger' then buy a proper car. A Fiesta is at best a woman's shopping trolley and when it gets a bit older, it's a....student banger.

If you want something like that, a 2nd hand 3-door Focus will do the job admirably - better than the Fiesta and it would stop you throwing £000's away. If you want to spend £11k on a car, buy a nice one - BMW/Merc or something sporty. £11k on a Fiesta because you get a couple of grand off for your Astra and it only costs £35 a year to tax is a government smoke screen tbh.
Agreed.
