Hi

My current system:

Pentium Dual-Core E2180 running at 3GHz
2GB DDR2 PC6400 Corsair XMS2 memory
Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H socket 775 motherboard
Radeon HD 3850 256MB
I forget which CPU cooler I have but it's an aftermarket one, I think it's an Akasa.

Basically I have about £300-£350 to spend and I want a new Quad-Core CPU, 4GB of memory and a good graphics card. I don't know whether I should go with nVidia or ATI though as back in May this year I was planning to upgrade my GPU and I bought a 4870. I installed it and I could not get it working in my system. The card just wouldn't be detected by the system, and it just booted into a black screen a lot of the time. I tried numerous drivers and exchanged the card to make sure it wasn't faulty and it still wouldn't work. That has kind of put me off buying ATI and I'm more interested in nVidia these days.

I don't know whether I need a new cooler for the CPU, this one seems to be working fine and I have had it in the system since May 2008 and had no issues (knock on wood).

But yeah, I'm just looking for some recommendations on what I can get for the price. The setup is mainly used for gaming and that is why I'm upgrading.

Thanks for your help.

I suggest you to leave sk775 and get AM3 as sk 775 si dead.AM3 is future proof and its the best choice when building a low budget system as it offers best bang for buck. The GTS 250 will allow you to play anygame at high settings with decent fps.The Athlon II is a very capable cpu when it comes to multitasking and games.

If the response to your question is slow, it's probably because everyone is scouring the Steam site for deals...

I wouldn't be put off by the ATI problem - everyone has horror stories from one side or the other, it's just one of those things. At the moment, ATI have the most future-proof cards.

I guess you'll need a new motherboard too?

Edit: ninja'd :)

I don't need a complete new system though. I have a Cooler Master CMStorm Scout case that I bought back in May, two hard drives that are fine, a Cooler Master 520W modular power supply that again I only bought back in May and I'm fine running Windows XP but may upgrade to Vista at some point.

I just want a new CPU/memory and graphics card at the moment as I don't find that I want to upgrade anything else as it's all be done quite recently bar those three things and the motherboard but I don't think that needs an upgrade. I have had no problems with my motherboard and it's compatible with Core2Quad CPU's, can support 800/1066/1333 FSB speeds, up to 4GB DDR 800 memory and is all around fine at the moment for me. Buying a new motherboard would just be adding on a pointless expense really.
