Spec me a new HDD

My current set-up is a 150gb Raptor X and a 400GD seagate barracuda 7200.(8 or 9, not sure). I'm satisfied with performance but I'm also aware that the old Raptor is no longer King of the hill and can be outdone by some much cheaper drives nowadays, but I digress.

My main issue is the noise these two drives create.

I have no point of reference for noise levels of modern drives, just that raptors are considered noisey, however my seagate is louder still.

OK, so here's the criteria I'd like to try and stick to:

Budget is about £80 give or take.

Noise (the lack thereof) should be equal priority with performance.

I'd like to keep the performance levels I already have but know that realistically going for quietness will probably interfere with this.

Need between 400GB and 1TB of storage.

As much as I'd like to go down the SSD route price and capacity aren't low and high enough respectively.

That's pretty much it. I would be willing to set up RAID 0 on two smaller drives if this is likely to keep noise low but speed high.

Thanks for any help.

The Raptor is still a fast drive, new standard drives can't keep up with it (on seek times anyway). If the Seagate is even noisier then I'd be worried as they're normally fairly quiet. I would keep the raptor, substitute the Seagate with a WD Black or Sammy F1. I'd go for the biggest drive you can afford, space is cheaper the bigger you go so I'd have to say look at the 1TB versions.

I was thinking 1TB sammy F1 to be honest, at least that way when SSDs become affordable I can get one of those for OS and Apps but keep the sammy for data. As I said, not as fussed about performance as I am about noise.
