Hi All

ive been with Virgin media for ages now. its largely been fine, but recently, ive found it grind to a halt. running a couple of speed tests seems to miraculously fix it for a bit. Theyve been proper taking the **** on price for a while now too.

i saw the deal from EE on another thread at £25.99 for 900Mbs and £33.99 for 1.6Gbs, but i'm getting £9 a month more than that. £34.99 and £42.99 respectively.

Tempted by the 1.6Gbps, but likely overkill for me.

Plusnet is coming up at £28.99 a month. I might get some cashback if the system works (i always forget to use the cashback sites).

I have Ubiquiti unify kit at home UCG-fiber, and U6 pro for wifi (plus some switches etc) so i wouldnt be using the included router (id prefer not to rent it at all to be honest)

Anyone else i should be looking at?

Thanks

Do you need IPv6? If not, PlusNet is a good option.

Personally wouldn't touch Zen, they are not Zen of old and still have Manchester/London gateway ping ping.

I dont know if i need IPv6. so i guess therefore i dont? why would one need IPV6?

Thanks

If you don't know then you don't need it. I guess there may be a handful of sites which are IPv6 only but there are technologies in place to work around that.

Was with Lit and was very happy with speeds, prices and CS (fantastic on the couple of occasions I had to contact them - related to static IPs etc.). They since bailed and I got 'orphaned' on to Zen and no complaints so far but I haven't had to contact them yet (static included by default).

For me, the symetric upload speeds were a big deal, as I was trying to do YouTube stuff etc. at the time 9and still need to transfer large files for work at times)

I'd never go for the 1gig or faster speed, you'll never really make full use of it, especially over wi-fi, and they come in at a premium.

150 meg/s is fine for most people and 500 meg/s is probably fast enough for a household.

I'd recommend getting a WiFi access point with the 6ghz spectrum if you want to see an actual performance bump to your experience.

Yup we are on 500 and at no point have I ever thought I could do with this being faster.

Im still under contract with Zen been with them for years and not got any complaints. City Fibre have been digging over the last couple of weeks so will be looking to upgrade soon. I'm thinking of going down the 500 package as its £1 more expensive than i currently pay and more than enough for me.

I’ve just gone with Aquiss.

I was intending on going with Starlink, but they were so unbelievably shocking to deal with that I avoided the headache of dealing with them altogether and cancelled.

They even tried to block a refund on the delivery cost of the equipment, because “their policy says they don’t refund it”.

In the end they had to escalate it to their legal department, over £19 - absolutely not the kind of company I want to transact with.

After my issues with Alphabet and VW, I’ve become immeasurably strict on stuff like this :P

In your situation, I’d go with Plusnet for budget options and ID Net / Aquiss for a more premium/reliable option.

Mostly agree, but 1gbps was only £1-2 more per month than 500mbps... So depends on the gap in price.

Got orphaned in at the same price on to Zen, but when it comes time to renew I'll consider dropping some speed if it's noticeably cheaper (although it is nice to be able to download a 20-30GB game in a few minutes!)
Gaming PC is wired and I have a decent access point (it's getting on a bit, but I get 3-600mbps from a room away on my work laptop)... definitely worth a bit extra on an AP if you're on WiFi for the systems you care about!
