Spec Me A New PC!

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and I've been away from PCs for a long time, it's like starting all over again. Last time I built a PC quad core didn't exist. And so my dual core 'gaming pc' with 2gb ddr 2 ram just, well, it just doesn't cut it anymore! Neither does the 256mb graphics card in it.

I need help creating a new machine, a monster, (within my reasonably priced budget lol), I'm looking to do a lot of gaming, general word processing etc. The main part, is gaming. Another important point is that my girlfriend, will I imagine want to use the machine from time to time to render her work. She works in the animation industry. So a PC capable of playing my lovely games, but also has the horsepower to pop out quick render times and run various animation programs. (I have no idea what programs they are, I pretend to listen when she tells me).

Also, I know very little about the new generation of machines. Should I risk building my own and getting a little more out of my money, or is it just as cheap to get OC to build it for me !? Are there any prebuilt machines on the site that would suit me? My budget is around, £1000-1200 ideally...it can however be increased.

Points to note,
-I have a monitor/projector/keyboard/mouse
-I already have an OS

Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

Do you think it's worth building my own? or do you think with being inexperienced with new gen stuff it's more of a risk...and buying a prebuilt one may just be the sensible option.

if you have never built a pc before then buying a built one would be sensible.

if you have done it before, many people on these forums can help with any questions you might have during the build, also you tend to get more for your money.

completely random 6870 crossfire spec and HEX core CPU.

So far I'm leaning toward's stulid and burells suggestion. Ultima Black OPs with the SLI option. I would really like the SSD but I think that will be an upgrade left for the future maybe.

The pre-built option sounds the best for you, and GTX460 SLI will certainly eat any game alive.
I'd tend away from a hex-core chip at this time because while it is great for rendering, its not soo good for gaming - i7 or even i5 will destroy it.

sorry for the noob question, but why is hexcore chip not so good at gaming if it has more cores. I realise it is probably a really basic question, but I have zero knowledge of the new stuff.

most games make use of just two cores, there are more and more coming that use four, but six core are I think zero.

but other programs such as video creation and similar multi threaded apps will run faster with more cores.

due to my girlfriend using it for some of her work as well, would it be wise to invest in a hexcore machine then? since she probably would make use of all 6 cores? and do OCUK do any prebuilt 6core machines?

I suppose it comes down to a choice then. me or girlfriend. 6 core for the maximum speed for girlfriends work, or, extra sli slot for my lovely gaming. Is it possible to be greedy and get the best of both worlds? 6xcore,6gb ram, and a mobo that has the extra sli slot so in the future I can add another gpu if I choose to?

if you went with that AMD system i linked too you can have dual graphics with ATI crossfire.

instead of a single 6870 card, phone OCUK and they will fit two 6850 in crossfire for the correct £££ of course, they will accommodate.

look at the reviews - http://www.anandtech.com/show/3987/...renewing-competition-in-the-midrange-market/8 - two 6850 beat two GTX460.

ah ok, that sounds great then. So with the titan prism I can get x6 core, x6 gb ram, then regards to graphics I can have a 6850, then if I choose to at a later date I can just add another 6850 myself? Then obviously other sexy stuff such as a 120gb ssd upgrade for christmas as well. This seems to be the system for me.

yep, adding another gpu will be simple enough, ditto the SSD.

you wont get 6GB of ram, the AMD cpu memory controller is "dual channel" so its either 4gb or 8gb (fitted in pairs)

again just ask them if you place an order, there may not be a problem, or the extra ram might mean that the 4ghz overclock of the system cant be guaranteed.

just speak to them and ask.
