Ok, I currently have an old netgear DG834GT that I found in the loft today. I had actually forgot i even had it up there becuase I only used it in my old house when I had ADSL which I didnt really get on with.

I have since moved and now have a 20mbit cable connection with virgin media. I was planning on using the above as a basic switch so I could share the internet around to some of my equipment downstairs like my TV, humax box, DVD player and my PC but it seems it either doesnt work or I am doing something wrong.

So, i need something that I can use with my basic virgin modem to connect all the stuff in my house to the router. I need about 4 wired connections but will need to be able to have a couple wireless ones (Phone and PC upstairs) If I buy a router does it come with a dongle to connect at least 1 pc? If someone could spec me what I need, I would like to Ideally stream some starcraft 2 games from Justin.TV on the wireless PC upstairs so i would imagine it would have to be as fast as possible. I can spend up to as much as is needed to get what I require but obviously the cheaper the better, thanks., if cost is an issue I could ditch the wireless part and wire up the PC upstairs but that would mean I can access my network on my phone which I would like to do if possible.

This router should do the job nicely:

It has four Ethernet ports and 1 WAN Port (your modem will connect in to this), it also has good wireless capabilities. It does not come with a wireless adapter.

This wireless adapter should do nicely (PCI):

Or, if you just want a USB adapter to plug in to your computer, this:

Or, if you want to spend just that little bit extra, then this (as you'll probably get a better signal; some very good reviews as well):
