Hi, im new to the forum. my friend pointed me here...
I am wanting to spend £600 + vat on a PC and need some help with selecting the best i can buy for my money. My only requirement is that i have a antec 1200 case, dont ask, i just like the look :-)

thanks in advance.

Motherboard - Asus M4A785TD-V Evo AMD 785G (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard £74.99
Processor - AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.20GHz £129.98
RAM - G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit £84.99
Graphics card - Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 Vapor-X 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £139.99
PSU - Corsair VX 550W ATX Power Supply £67.99
HDD - Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM £39.99
DVD-RW - LiteOn IHAS324-32 24x DVD±RW ReWriter SATA - (Black) Retail £19.99
Total: £557.92

You have about £40 spare so you could go for a better motherboard or a bigger hard drive :) You could go cheaper with the PSU but I find Corsair to be very high quality and worth it.

How does the AMD X4 compare to a i3 or i5, would i be able to afford one of those setups? Does that above price include the antec case? :-) ta.

Case dosen't do much pal but sit there and look strange when you get a nice lady in your room, they think it is some kind of super computer and ask embarasing questions.

the tri core AMD > i3 processor, i would get the tri core AMD, it performs great in games, just ordered one myself to be honest.

The AMD X4 is much cheaper than an i3 or i5 and it is basically as good.

Sorry the above price does not include the 1200 I though you said you already had one :S I would also recommend not going for a 1200 they are very BIG! its really for people who want the 3 sized radiators for water cooling and the ATI 5970.

A 902 would fit the above spec easily.

Antec 902 Nine Hundred Two Ultimate Gaming Case - Black - £81.99 it looks the same the onyl diffrence is the price and the over all size I eprsonally own a 902 and I must say it looks awesome! This would make the price £640 but i think you cant really go any lower without going into the older hardware :/ the motherboard I put up there is already slightly old.

I'd reconsider your case, take a look at the coolermaster storm scout, great looking case for around 60 quid, would shave some ££ of there

Ill have another look at the cases again to try and drop the price a little. thanks for your help though :-) Is it worth buying a SSD drive? And a Smaller storage drive?

On your budget I'd personally skip on the SSD drive and use the cash to get the best available other components. And yes I'd have to agree that an X4 build would probably be better on a £600 budget.

thanks guys, going to buy this tonight or tomorrow, would be nice if i can get my forum post count up in that time for free delivery...:)

I thought higher the cache the faster the HDD is

Anyhow if you setup any decent 7200rpm HDD with RAID0 it will work very quick.

Raid is probably not worth it if you are on a budget. You get a bit of extra speed, but you also increase the risk of data loss as if either HD goes you lose the data on both.

I agree with previous advise that AMD is a better for a budget. Intel might be able to go faster but you pay a hefty premium for that privilege, especially when you remember that intel mobos are generally more expensive too. x3 is a pretty good compromise for a bit of an extra speed boost, but I think the x2 550 will be enough for most usage and at a very decent price.
