I know another spec me thread, but this time i've got experience of PC building behind me :D

Looking to get a PC put together for my dad. He's got a budget of £1500 max (but no doubt would want to spend less) so he can get a decent 'standard' pc. Typically he will be wanting to use the PC for his photography storage and processing along with the usual father pc related stuff. Nothing too processor heavy apart from handling large (15mb) raw image files along with the associated Photoshop processing.

He wants the basic pc build, along with monitor and operating system. keyboard and mouse can be used from his old pc.

Possibly subtract say £300 from the budget for a decent 22" monitor possibly pushing up to 24"

Any thoughts welcomed :)

your old man wants to stick to 32bit windows i presume?
and if its just for office use, why such a loaded budget?!
good 800-900 pounds will see you through with a 24" screen.

but 1500 is 3x office pc's(or more) in my opinion fella, can run three stuff!.

No I'm of the thinking that he should go for a 64bit windows so he can take advantage of the 6Gb mem for an i7 system.

Although the majority of his work will be low on cpu / graphics / mem usage I'm allowing for any photo manipulation which may push things a bit further.

I've been looking around myself and got up to about £1250 but still no monitor. So I'm refining things on where I can 'save' money to get a decent monitor.

well if you have it then i guess you can splash out.

here's two:

multi screen will be nice for multi tasking having 2-3 applications viewable is very useful from a personal point of view when i use it for work.

double check from case forum to see if that card fits into that case. i'm not a 100% certain but i'm more then half sure it does.

or

Thanks for the suggestions.

I think the second one is looking more appealing although I dont think he'll have room on his desk for two monitors so thats saving something. also from a personal point of view I'd probably swap the HD for a Western Digital 1Tb and 500Gb drives instead. And I doubt he'd need the blu ray player so that can be downgraded to a DVD RW.

Will have a look at a possible case increase as well. One thing I forgot to mention that I'd probably be replacing the stock fan with a proper cooler with screws rather than push pins.

tbh your dad wont need a i7 for what he wants to do, a i5 is more than enough,I would get a i5 750,MSI gd65,Patriot Sector 5 Viper II 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-12800 1600MHz ,Samsung f3 1tb,Sapphire 5770,Corsair HX650 and dvd drive plus your choice of case and monitor

two heads are better then one.

tbh fella i doubt you need all these fancy gears as i said earlier. a good dual core with about 4gb ram will see you father through any application.

your choice though.

Do not waste money on an i7 920 and an Asus Rampage like asoxedri spec'd there is no need for it at all, Go i5 or AMD it will be more than enough for his photo work, and with the money saved he might bring you for a few pints and a kebab on the way home!

I think its the case that my dad wants something that will last without too much slowdown. Hes currently got a Dell 2.4Ghz pentium 4 which has lasted him about 6 - 8 years and its horrendous on startup times etc with antivirus / spyware / office toolbar etc loading up. Even opening up apps it takes a while.

I'm using a quad core and although i use some gaming along with photo editing it does me fine so might see if he wants to spend less on it whilst still achieving what he wants.

EDIT :

Will have another look at the prebuilt systems although after first look i think they were a little shy on storage as i think this pc will do him for his retirement.
