Right I'll try to keep this to a minimum without going on......

Basically a mate of mine wants to get into PC gaming, he was looking at gaming laptops but told him he could buy a decent gaming desktop for a lot cheaper.

He's now asked me to spec him one up, now trouble is I've not built a PC for 2ish years and am a bit rusty on whats out and about at the moment regarding hardware so I'm asking for some help/recommendations.

Most importantly the budget he's given me is about £500....... and I'm not expecting anything completely amazing, just something to run COD4, Crysis, New Fear comfortably using all of the £500.

He does not need a monitor as we will run it through his HD TV and already has a decent wireless keyboard and mouse.

So its just all the components for the box we need, only specific request is a DVD-RW but they are next to nothing price wise so not really something to worry to much about.

If anyone needs any more specifics let me know.

Really appreciate anyones input on this.

Many thanks in advance

Depending on what Case/Psu you went for. MB (DS3R), RAM (4GB Geil), CPU+ cooler(E2200+ tuniq, overclocked 3+Ghz), HD(250GB), GFX card (8800GT) would come to about. £450 + Case/psu

Cheers Darryl, juts puuting these items together in my basket...... that CPU? £57 inc vat seems very cheap and good value..... is that a lower end chip or have Intel dropped there prices a lot while I've been away???

Also which 8800GT? theres a few to go at with different prices etc etc

Also would you go for 2 x 2Gb for the Geil RAM?

Feel free to provide links..... OCUK range is huge!!!

nah the heatsink it comes with will be fine in that case, i suppose the option of overclocking will be there to him if he wants too.

That should be fine

Cheers again mate, got £90 for a case and PSU! *returns to scouring the OCUK site*

never really read anything about that PSU but ive heard that case isnt exactly built the best

Yer the CPU is great, should get your mate to overclock it tho to get the best out of the newer games

Right I've shown him that case and he loves the look of it so we'll go with your suggestion..........

Is the CPU pretty straight forward to OC? if so I might suggest to him that we can always buy a cooler at a later date if he's not happy with its performance. Thing is though with it not being my PC..... something goes wrong and I fry it I'm going to have to fork out!

With that cooler and cpu i managed to get 3.0GHz with load temps of about 50/52 degrees. these chips will run at 60-70 degrees 24/7 without any trouble. The main thing is to get the system stable by increasing the voltage. As long as you don't go much higher than 1.5v on this cpu it will be good you a few years.

Just had a thought, will the 4Gb be alright with 32-Bit XP? I remember reading somewhere that someone could only get 3Gb running with XP? and tbh I really dont want to subject him and myself (builing the thing) to the horrors of Vista!!!

I may drop to 2Gb then.... can always be upgraded at a later date.

I've had bad experiences with Vista..... in my opinion its just another ME.

Dropping to 2Gb will reduce the price slightly also so might then add the cooler.

Right, reduced it to 2Gb and total from OCUK is £460..... I'll collect as I'm local to save another tenner!

Think its worth putting the £40 towards a better CPU or graphics card? what you think?

Open to any suggestions.... thanks again.
