Spec me a performance car 6.5k MAX

Just to point out OP went down the diesel route :D I just pointed out a 330d would be a poor choice compared to a 530/535d imo. Fair point though about having no context.

If he wants more modern but much like his Evo, why doesn't he look at a 7?

The last line however "so I am thinking nothing thirsty with high insurance. What is the best bang for performance buck?" Is somewhat contradictory...

How is this thread pointless? The aim is for suggestions on cars that he could buy with his budget that may forfil his needs. I'll admit the requirements I posted are not great but some suggestions can be made, comments like yours are "pointless" I would imagine most of your 100,000 posts are "pointless" comments too? If you have nothing topic related to post then don't bother responding. Just for you I will alter the title...:)

Now back on topic, his evo was doing 18MPG and very high on insurance, so another evo would not be an option. He does a mixture of local and motorway driving after work/weekends, but uses public transport to get to work.

Im bias as i own one, but he has to get a supra! :P you should get a reasonable BPU TT for 6.5. however its older than an evo 6 so not much more modern.

It's pointless because the criteria is so vague, you could have a list of cars the length of your arm. It's not going to help you, is it.

Try to be a bit more specific and then you'll get help and advice on which cars are pointless to be looking at, and which cars would suit the needs better.

You came here asking for help, don't flame those who try to assist.

Criteria seems to be:

Performance car
Nothing thirsty (20+MPG)
4 seats
More modern than a Evo6 (younger than 10 years old)
Easy to sell on
Can be a diesel

OP, can you verify/confirm?

Sorry wasnt trying to flame.

I will update the main thread with something more clear, thanks Rossi

Too be honest he is going to struggle to get a better car than his 6 for the money.

Mazda 6 MPS fits the bill of slightly more modern but after driving a 360bhp evo 6 will get bored of really quickly. Although a mazda 3 mps will most likely be easier to sell.

3 MPS will remap to 300BHP and 320ftlbs without too much trouble. They certainly make for an interesting drive. Very understated too which I like. Either way it fits the bill of this thread quite easily as they're very cheap to pick up now.

Although the E46 M3 seems like a good choice on paper, one at <6.5k will most likely become a money pit.
