Spec me a pet!

For starters all those animals need a lot of care to be sociable. My rats get out for more than 2 hours a night. An hour a night is recommended. Unless you could give them that I wouldn't suggest you got them.

Rats and Degu also need to be in groups and you'd need a cage large enough for the group, obviously.

I'm on the phone so will breakdown the cost of rats in a little bit but if you can think of any specific questions fire away.

Is this always the case? I have a hamster and don't really get it out much certainly not every night but thats because it likes it that way, it comes out when its going to be cleaned and sometimes goes in its ball but it doesn't really like the ball. It is perfectly happy where it is, so don't believe this stuff about them getting depressed .. I guess there all different though some like to be out a lot and some dont.

We had two Guinea Pigs until recently (they died at the good-ish ages of 4 and 6) and they were so cute and funny. Easy to look after but beware when they get older, they will squeak for food / grass / lettuce every time you so much as rustle a plastic bag, turn on a tap, or sometimes just when you walk in the door!

Huh? Yes they are.

No, they're not. I can't remember the word now.

EDIT: Crepuscular. Primary activity at dusk and dawn.

They generally sleep for a set amount of hours, wake up for a few, then sleep again. Plus, they change their rhythm to suit the owner and are willing to come out the cage any time.

What I said was more aimed towards rats but the fact the hammy isn't coming out could be that it's scared. If you force it to interact (to socialise my rats when nervous I tend to wear a hoodie and put them in the front pocket) it will hopeful become more social and will want to come out.

I also wouldn't recommend a ball as they can overheat and they can get stressed out in it.

I stand corrected :)

The girlfriends bloody rats keep me up all night with the noise they make though :(

...they are snakes, surely thats enough of a reason? :p

Nah they are really cool to watch if they are out and about at night, love watching mine eat on a Saturday afternoon :D

Yeah, they're fascinating to watch. Great, easy to look after pets.

What makes them awesome?

They will thrive on as much or as little attention as you care to give them. Corn Snakes are non-aggressive and passive (with rare exception) and can barely make a pinprick even if they did choose to bite, unlike some other snakes.

You can handle your snake for five minutes once a month, or an hour a day (provided ambient temperatures aren't ridiculously low) and it won't care either way. Great for busy people. They're there when you want them, and quite happy to be left alone when you don't have the time.

They only need to be fed between once a week or once every month or two (depending on species and age), and their food is very inexpensive. The only other requirement is a secure cage (plastic boxes cost next to nothing), a heat source (heat mats covering half the tub/viv are very cheap indeed) and a thermostat.

Snakes also look cool, come in thousands of colours, patterns and varieties (and that can be said for one species alone never mind all snakes!) and make great pets.

Nuff said? :D
