spec me a printer

I am looking for a decent mid range printer and I have no clue about printers at all. It would be used for printing out essays and lecture notes in PowerPoint format and decent quality photos. It would also be used for scanning images. Anyone got any recommendations?

All colour? Is there many essay and lecture notes to print out? What sort of volume per month, ish? of Black and colour?

Lasers are fantastic for black documents as the print fast and cheap.
Inkjets will come in multifunction and do the lot, albeit at an increased cost.

Most of the things that are printed out would be in colour and not much more than 30 pages a month, speed wouldnt be an issue to be honest.

An inkjet would be the way to go. Although I cannot recommend a brand as I use lasers.
I always used to use Epson.
