Ok, currently got a Gigabyte X800XL 256mb with a silent heatpippe on it, and it looks like it's on the way out, because it's started locking my system up during 3D gaming.

I don't need anything cutting edge, just something quiet, 256mb minimum, and decent performance, costing upto £150. I've used ATI's for the past 4 or 5 years, but I've got no problem with switching to Nvidia if it gives me more back for the money.

Thanks in advance

Under is Probably a little better, with a quiet cooler.

I've got an Accelero x2 on my x1900xt and you can't even tell is running. HDD is louder and is a samsung spinpoint which is pretty quiet !

So even this with a x2 would probably be under £150,

Was just looking at both of those, and Toms hardware's reviews. I think it's gonna be the XT :)

I'll get my credit card....

Its a good card, with decent power at a good price.
The standard fan can be a bit noisey on power up but you can set the fan controls via ati tool and anything under about 40% is pretty quiet.

Really? That's not a good thing for me, as I've got a particularly noise sensitive other half.

Just checked the OcUK website, and the only 8800GTS they've got in stock in my ideal price range is the OcUK branded one. Anyone know if this is a quiet cooler?

Have you tried looking elsewhere, there are some good deals on the web at the moment I have seen some going for < £185

Blasphemer! Got to be honest, no I haven't, but I know the guys @ OcUK HQ, so I'd rather put my money there.

lol, if somethings cheaper elsewhere I'll go there its pretty pointless buying a BFG £199 here when for example you could get it for £10 less. Spend the extra money if you want to if you like giving tips :)

That XT is noisy, if you're going to spend that much the 8800 GTS 320MB is a much better card with a much quieter reference cooler.

Agreed from what I've read the 8800 coolers are very quiet.
But then the 8800 are around the £200ish mark and not under £150.

If you can budget to nearly up to £200 then thatsa different kettle of fish, at that budget 8800 wins all the time. The OCUK version is built by BFG so it's going to be good. They've probably just stuck a deal with OCUK as they shift a lot of cards. I wouldn't be put off by the OCUk brand as it'll be as good as any.

Same as the BFG i have, which is quieter than my Nexus case fans (which in themselves are quiet). If you can afford the 8800 then I would get it. If you prefer sub 150 then I would go for the x1950 Pro here.

But I would seriously think about saving up for even the cheapest 8800, it is in a different league.

silent mate :) 8800s are silent unless u crank the fan speed up yourself.

Even at load you wont hear the card but certainly at idle its silent :D

Im amazed at how silent my GTS is, even when underload. :)

If i was you i would delete those posts mishima, stuff like that certainly aint allowed on here. ;)

Guys, for the first time in a while, I'm going Nvidia. Budget bedamned!

OcUK 8800GTS just ordered,
credit card dented to the tune of £202
g/f not yet finding out how much I've spent - priceless :)

Thank you all for your help, much appreciated.
