HI guys so my car is now starting to throw up some big bills and at 15 years old I'm concerned it's only going to get worse. So what should I consider as an alternative, I've test driven a cla 45 which was nice and I'm test driving an rs focus today and hopefully a 435i as well. I've been offered 27,500 part ex for mine which I think is a joke so what's the best way to haggle with dealers over this as really I was expected a trade in of 35k with a budget of a couple of grand more. I would like some a bit more practical and simulating power.

Cheers

Chris

Different dealers will give you a difference price on the PX.

Look up the private market and get an average then take 20% off and expect around that for PX. Again though some garages will give you a better offer if they think they could shift your car quicker than the car you are after.

Also black on black 435i Msport = nom. If i could afford to buy one outright i would. Not sure how it would compare to your porka though.

Thats what I wondered, I don't want anything too soft. For example my wife's st is a bit soft compared to mine. It also needs to have 4/5 seats so kids can get in. The only thing I noticed is that it's a 3 litre twin turbo with 300hp which seems a little low but I suspect it's to try and distance it from the m4. I'm also looking at newer cars (I've ruled out full fat M's as if they go wrong they will be more expensive then my current car). What's the 8 speed auto like in the 435? I've seen a white exterior/black interior which looks OK (from the tiny thumbnails Stratstone use). What are modern BMW's like in poor weather?

Do they still make a 435i?

Cant comment on a 435i but I do have a 340i. :) Assume gearbox is similar, its nice and smooth in comfort, great in sport mode, flappy paddles work ok but I find I dont use them a great deal.

So far we have only done 2k miles in the 3 months of ownership and the worst weather we have had to deal with is rain. I have had no issues with it so far but not exactly been extreme conditions. :)

Surely those cars are going to feel somewhat sedate and way less special than a 911 Turbo? Have you considered a used C63 AMG or one of its competitors?

I did but again I think it will cost essay more than my current car. I can get low 20s on my commute but a c63 a reckon I'd struggle to see high teens :). I am quite worried but my wife thinks it's time to grow up (unfortunately).

The 435i isn't a twin turbo, btw.

Neither is it really anything like a 911 Turbo. Whilst your 911 turbo might drop bills its important when working out if its a good idea to change it to offset these bills against the fact that the value of your 911 Turbo is probably only staying static or going upwards at this point.

Whereas the value of something like a 435i is going downwards. You could find it no cheaper to own, you'll just be swapping expenditure on repairs for expenditure on depreciation.

What Fox said. I'd certainly not be replacing a top of the line sports car for a cookie cutter BMW. The 435 is a nice car but it's leagues away from a 911 Turbo, even an older one. The Turbo will not depreciate much more and in fact may even gain value.

Does this engine suffer the IMS bearing failure issue? Have you had it replaced or taken care of? Due to the IMS failure these cars are only going to go bang over the years making them rarer, unless people want to spend thousands on an engine rebuild.

If you haven't sorted it yet, you can get ceramic bearings which are much more durable.

More info here.

These guys can carry out the upgrade for you if it hasn't been done already.

It doesn't have the ims issue as its the stronger meztger engine (not sure on spelling) it has 94,000 miles and something more practical would be nice. I'm currently sat in a BMW dealer and they have a brand new m140 for 30 grand which seems quite a nice change.

911t to a 1 series, doesn't compute!! Infact computer says no, on so many levels.

I just can't afford any more big bills. I've had 1100 to change disks and pads, 720 to change water pump and one of the turbos has siezed as well as a snapped actuator so that's at least 3 grand to fix.

the focus rs would be my choice. The MK1 and MK2 are holding value really well. whereas i think something like a bmw will just carry on down.

Deprivation doesn't bother me that much as I tend to keep cars for quite a few years.

So?

Porsche 911 Turbo - Value now £35k. Value in 10 years time £40k. Repair bills over 10 years £15k.

BMW M140i - Value now £30k. Value in 10 years time £6k. Repair bills over 10 years £3k.

10 years is quite a few years but we can see purely from looking at depreciation and repairs only that the M140i has cost significantly more money than the 911 Turbo over those 10 years despite enormous repair bills.

You cannot ever ignore depreciation unless you are happy to make sub optimal financial choices. The only correct view about discounting depreciation is 'I don't really care, it costs what it does and thats the car I fancy'.

If there is any financial consideration at all, ie mounting repair bills etc, it has to be considered.

You will regret selling it and getting something mundane. I speak as someone who sold a GT3 and bought and RS4. RS4 was a great car, but it's no GT3 and I missed it hugely. You are talking about cars less special than an RS4 so suspect you will want to stab yourself.

What bills does it have? The 996 turbo is a solid appreciating asset. You will enter into a depreciating asset with the cars proposed.
