Hi all,

Im on an ADSL connection with sky, peaking at around 9MB/s. Use wireless for smartphone and Mac connection but only small distance required. Dont want to spend more than £60 if i can help it, cheaper would be better. Looking for something that is reliable as i have a WHS running 24/7 that i connect to from work, parents house etc. and run backups to.

Suggestions of purchase greatly appreciated :D

You cannot replace a Sky router without breaking their T&Cs which you signed in the contract.

There are ways to acquire your ADSL username/password from their locked routers from a particular website.

It all depends on which Sky router you have which dictates the success rate of this hack.

If you're on a real budget look at the TP Link routers.

It is a bit of a strange one, i actually talked to customer services about this and although they said it was part of their T&Cs they will not terminate any contract if you choose to swap the router, they just wont be able to provide technical support. They even provided me with the username and password that i need to setup the new router. Highly recommend just asking if anybody reads this and is planning the same.

I am looking at the budget end i suppose. I just cant see the advantage of spending £100 on a router if a cheaper one does the same job. Im not saying there are not advantages, but i figure that if i dont know what the advantages are then i probably dont need them?

Well they certainly shouldn't have given you the username and password, although the other bit is correct. Won't kick you off just won't support you.

have you looked at the Sky hub sr101? my original sky netgear dg834gt died a couple of months ago and this is what replaced it. not a bad deal for £40 (think the £40 deal expires next month iirc)

I am using a tp link TD-W8960N cheap and works fine, been using it since the summer i find wireless coverage is good all around the house too
NOTE it must be the same model as I posted not the 8961 latest version. That is pants(i had one and sent it back)
Sky unlimited here

That's very interesting indeed. Its probably a case of "it depends who you talk to" at Sky CS. As nine times out of ten they won't help.

But as said if you're on a super budget then go TP Link, if you're mid range look at Asus, if you want the best go DrayTek.

Would anybody be able to explain what sort of advantages i might get from buying something more than the TP-link w8960 please?

First thing you need to do is be able to extract your username and password, without those buying a new adsl router/modem is pointless.unless you just want a new router for the better than skys wireless range

in that case i personally found that the tp link gave slightly better synch than the sky router, also you can see errors etc listed and the wireless was a lot better
Only around £33 too so it won`t break the bank

General rule of thumb as you go upwards in price, the following improve.

Reliability
Wireless range
Ability to configure more
Build quality

I know the Billion BiPAC 7800 supports sky's MER and it also has the WoL and Fibre functionality. Do you know if the above 3 routers each support sky fibre and have WoL?

Been looking into this router malarkey a little more today because i expect this time of year i can get a good deal from somewhere.

I would like to have WoL since i have an add-in on WHS that i'd love to be able to use.

Would love to have the Cable/ADSL combo ports. I may have fibre by this time next year so upgradability would be nice.

I dont know what MER is that you mentioned?

A decent QoS system would be great.

Just as an additional question when i get this sorted, is it worth talking to sky and asking them to re assess my broadband speed to see if they can boost it a little more towards the 14MB/s that im paying for?

MER (MAC encapsulated routing) is replacing the older PPPoA used by most ISPs on Sky LLU. Not sure what the reasons are.

I upgraded to the SR101. It appears stable and I'm getting a faster connection than with the previous Netgears. Worth a punt at £39, and it's fully supported.

I did have a look at the SR101 but it only has 10/100 ports. Much rather have gigabit coz i want to try and have just a 256GB ssd in my pc and then work off the network.

by the time ive spent £40 on a sky router and another £40 on a decent gigabit switch it gets close to the point where i may as well but a £100 router :p
