Spec me a road bike

Just go for SPD-SL pedals, especially If you're going to upgrade to them eventually anyway. I jumped in feet first and haven't looked back.

Done about 1500 miles in mine and I'm going to be ordering new cleats soon, even then I'll push mine a bit further. They get damaged the more you walk on them and I walk around the factory concrete in then so they've worn a bit faster than they should.

£6 replaced.

People have mentioned to me that they use SPD-SL pedals through the summer and switch them for the winter. You could take that option? Although I won't be, my pedals work fine for me so I'm not messing with them, when I get a CX bike I'll get some more SLs for that too and just use my overshoes when the weather's rubbish.

Aww just seen what you've ordered :( I really want that bike! I have a Defy 3 and although it's good, I wish I'd got that one! I didn't know enough at the time. Brilliant choice.

I'm upgrading my chainset to 105 at the end of the year.

I've just tried some northwave scorpius srs shoes on which are SPD shoes, I like the idea that I can walk in them too without being too uncomfortable. What are they like to own? Are they good value at £62.49?

I bought them after reading up on them, they were £59.99 reduced from £100 from Evans. Got a helmet and some CBoardman pedals too to get me going (which were priced up wrong in Halfords :p (£24.99 instead of £29.99)).

Good choice on shoes and sounds like a good deal, I'm using Northwave GTX boots and very impressed with the quality. I have other Northwave clothing too I've been more than happy with quality wise - the fit is more relaxed than say Sportful/Castelli but a step up from DHB's Active ranges. They look nice and light with the mesh at the sides, so if you're riding in rain it would be best to get some overshoes! (I can recommend the DHB Neoprene's)

Not heard of Boardman pedals, although they look very similar to my M530 in style/use/fit. The flat surface is great when commuting - easy to pedal without being clipped in which is really useful in stop/start traffic.

Helmet looks ok, nice and generic but see if you can remove the front visor - they look odd when riding a road bike and don't achieve anything (except maybe some heavy rain protection)! ;)

Well my bike arrived this morning nice and early :D

I went for a quick mile ride and i was knackered! I really need to get fit quick. I don't think my saddle is quite right. I definitely need lycra as riding in jeans isn't clever! The shoes seem good and the pedals / shoes work as the should, never had any accidents haha. Think i'll go for a few short rides today to get used to it / play with seat settings etc. Don't think i'm ready for the 10 mile commute to work yet, i just don't have the right clothes for it yet so i'll wait for the stuff i ordered online to be delivered. Next i need to look at nutrition and a water bottle.

Looks awesome! Couple of decal/design style changes to my Defy 1's which really make it pop! Like the seattube to the seat stays bit... Drool! ;)

I'm using 2 cheap Lifeline cages on mine (white), although a black one on your seattube may work better.

I use the SiS bottles as I like 800ml & cheap again. The High5's are ok but the plastic top (rather than the rubbery one on the SiS) hurts my teeth... I have a camelback and it's ok but a fiddle to open when riding (twist top).

How mine looks with white cages (& guards):

A black rear bottle cage may work better on mine too! ;)
