looking for a router


require dsl capable/ virgin media cable connection

minimum of 2 hard wired ethernet connections
wifi for 2 laptops for general surfing
and must have a connection available by usb for my old lappy that i use for surfing whilst gaming

Linksys WRT54GL with upgraded Tomato open source firmware.

Simple, elegant and it just plain works....

So it needs to support USB networking and you're also wanting cable/dsl compatibility. The first one is going to be a little tricky but the second one will be OK as long as you understand you will need to buy a separate modem if you go DSL and they are a little on the rare/buggy side in general. If you're still on Cable from your days of being an NTLer then the WRT54GL is a perfect choice for up to 50mbit, beyond that you'll need something else.

DD-WRT or Tomato are great, as are many of the other 3rd party firmwares for the WRT54Gx series.

*edit* if you want faster wifi then the Buffalo WHR-G54S-1 would be your best choice again with a DD-WRT firmware.
