Spec me a scary game :D

Realms of the Haunting! Scared the crap out of me... Back in 1997. Also I expect there a scary amount of work involved in getting it to work on a modern system! ;)

Not what you're looking for, but one of the scariest I've played is System Shock 2. Love that game.

Metro2033 if you've got the hardware to run it.... Well creepy game.

Doom 3, play it with the lights off, with headphones. Guaranteed poop your pants time.

Bioshock isn't as scary as those two, but its well wierd. Plus the fact you seem to somehow know its all underwater and you've got one option... keep on moving forward...

Silent Hill games are also well creepy...

Silent Hill is always good (I preferred the old ones though), and I can vouch for the penumbra games, but gfx-wise they haven't got much going for them. Made up for with content though for sure! Don't eat the spiders!

Just got SS2 running on Windows 7 and it runs perfectly and is still a very damn good game (running at 1920x1080 as well!).

I wasn't a fan of the Penumbra games a little to boring and an awful control system. The graphics aren't much to write home about either.

Don't be conned into thinking F.E.A.R is scary, it isn't, you will jump the FIRST time the scary bint on the box jumps you, assuming you are looking the right way at the time, after that the "scary" moments are just annoying flow breaking point of interest in an otherwise boring, stodgy, badly written train wreck of a game.

For scary:

Dead Space
Depends on what kind of horror scares you really, this is all gore and monsters.

Penumbra series
A bit of the above but you are essentially defenceless with some dodgy mind ****ery, you have to rely on stealth and quick thinking.

Condemned
"I don't want to go out there, please don't make me go out there....I have to go out there don't I?.......*sobs hysterically" Pretty much sums up my experiences with this game.

I disagree, FEAR had plenty of scary and eerie moments and used them rather effectively to build atmosphere too. Far more effective than FEAR2, in any case.

Silent Hill 2 - Not just scary but one of the all time greats in terms of atmosphere. 3rd person though but not action based.

STALKER shadow of Chernobyl & STALKER call of pripyat - again great atmosphere & a sense of incredible vulnerability.
