Looking for something new....i liked Stargate but i love special effects and distant worlds etc.

Or maybe something based on Earth?

Ideas?
 
Battlestar Galactica if you want something complex, epic and thought provoking.

Firefly if you want top-notch light entertainment.


IMO those two are probably the finest Sci-Fi series around, and sit squarely at opposite ends of the spectrum :)
 
If you've not seen it, Babylon 5, the effects are a little outdated, and the first series can be a little hard to get through, but the payback is immense :)

It was probably the first of the sci-fi shows to have a coherent story across almost the entire run, and actions from say an episode in S1 might have a payback in S4 :)
IIRC it's pretty much unique in that the same writer did almost all the scripts (and had the story well planned out before it was first aired), and that helps the story a lot.
 
In addition to the others mentioned:

Fringe, Stargate Universe if you haven't seen it already, and having watched two episode so far, Continuum seems like it's fairly decent.
 
I second the must see-ness of Babylon 5. A truly epic story once it gets going.

All the Star Treks.

All the Stargates and especially SGU which I thought was very good.

Not really spacey sci-fi but we are enjoying Warehouse 13 at the moment.

Looking forwards to Continuum season 2.
 
BSG. Makes every other sci-fi series ever made look silly, tbh. I'm currently watching it through for the 3rd time and it even gets better with repeat viewings.

EDIT: The modern remake of course :o The 70's original is also excellent if you want something more fun and cheesy :)

I'm currently watching it for the 3rd time also, just about to start seaon 4 so not much left now. :(

Yeah BSG, Babylon 5 and DS9 are the best imo.

Also Farscape is good.
 
It's dated now, and only ran for one series, but Space: Above and Beyond was a pretty decent series.
Total Recall 2070 was pretty good too.
 
Not sure why people love BSG so much. I watched the entire series and thought it was typical American religious pap. Oh, and if it isn't Dirk Benedict, it isn't Starbuck! :p

BSG is not typical religious pap, far from it. It's one of the best presentations of religion in TV that I've seen, because it presents all kinds of views on religion.
