Spec me a seat that doesnt cut me in half

The go-to cheap saddle suggestion is a Charge Spoon. I have one on my commuter and it's really comfy. That said, it doesn't work for everyone.

Other things to consider, are you wearing padded shorts? Is your riding position set up correctly? You don't want all your weight distributed on the saddle as that will put more pressure on your nethers.:D

Definitely Charge Spoon - AKA Fabric Spoon now - I have the Radius Elite model - it's about £40. And it's awesome. I have it on my mtb, and I've just ordered another for my road bike, which is replacing a kappa prologo, which is just awful.

Honestly you need to know how wide your sit bones are and make sure you get the right width. Personally I'd been through so many saddles until somebody at a bike shop explained this to me - once I found a saddle that was wide enough for me the joy could be heard for blocks.

Have the same saddle on all my bikes now, and seat comfort just isn't something I think about anymore. Don't be fooled into thinking it's padding by the way - it isn't, seems to make very little difference.

Various videos on YouTube on how to measure your sit bones.

I thought Charge still made the Spoon but the Scoop has changed to Fabric? I have both the Spoon (on MTB) and the Scoop on both road bikes. Perfectly fit for me and doesn't cost the earth.

Some shops have test saddles, but I went through many to find the right ones for me. However, riding position, padded shorts and getting used to sitting on a saddle (if you're a new cyclist) are just as important as getting the right saddle fit for your backside.

It can't be that huge :) I've known some pretty overweight people that have used the Charge Scoop (essentially the same as the spoon, though a little less soft) and found it to be very comfortable.

If you want something that is a bit wider you could try some knock offs of the Brooks saddles. They'll be about the same price as the gel monstrosity but infinitely more comfortable (after a wear-in period).

It's not about the size of your arse, it's about the width of your sit bones. Fabric has a thing on their site which gives you a saddle size range based on somatotypes, i'm not sure how accurate it is but it's a lot better than trying to measure the sit bones themselves which i've never had much luck with. Go to an actual store if you want that.

But yeah, padding will do nothing but exacerbate your issues. You don't want the saddle to "absorb" the pressure because then it will just go to all the wrong places, you want the saddle to be shaped so that the majority of the pressure goes through your sit bones which can actually support it for extended periods of time without limiting blood flow or even leading to injury.

Another key point - are you sure you've got your saddle height set correctly? Even a badly fitting saddle shouldn't be too bad over just 12 miles.

After just going out for my first ride in 10 months, I managed to go 20 miles on road bike, nice easy, flat route.
However, my bottom end is absolutely ruined.

Just purchased a charge spoon off wiggle for £20 - gotta be worth a go. Replacing a specialized riva, which is pretty darn firm! And tried to steal my shorts on a number of occassions!

Free saddle. Ordered one online to pick up from store...went the store and they didn't have it.

So the manager said if I popped in today he would give it me free :D
