Hi folks,
Im wanting to buy a security system with cameras, recording device, night vision etc.. for my property - Ideally with high definition and say 4-6 cameras.

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of system - looking at around £250. We already have intrusion alarm so this is simply for observation and identification of persons around the outside of the property.

Our chihuahua cost £600 18 years ago so I don't think you'd much of a guard pooch for that !!

You can get an ip camera with hi res for about £140 but you'll need to dedicate a hi power Pc to it over a good net connection and use (Free) ZoneMinder to control it.

Or buy a cheaper system. I'm using a 1500TVL 4 cam system that's about 720p res saving onto a 2Tb drive. (about £150)

[Edit]

As previously posted in H&G here is a night time grab from my DVR

Note that the garden shot ALSO has a 90 odd infra-red LED light illuminating the garden and my driveway camera wasn't aimed correctly when this screengrab was taken

I have never been a big fan of recording to a DVR and having that has the sole source of the video footage. I use local motion detection that records to local SD for fast reference as needed, whilst recording 24/7 to the cloud.
I use http://www.mangocam.com but of course it only works well if you have a small number of cameras.

Any more than 3 and it's better to reverse it, record 24/7 locally and record motion detection to the cloud. I would just feel better knowing if the dvr went walkies there was something else to fall back on.

Curious about these, in the dark, how much do they stand out? Do they give off much visible light? Faint red tinge or a blindingly obvious glow.

If you're face on then you can see them glowing faint red. They have a daytime sensor so switch off as light cometh.

You DO have to be extremely careful where and how you aim them though because you WILL get "WhiteOut Bounce back" if poorly aimed which is worse than useless.

When I first got mine I jury rigged it pointing out of the kitchen window then looked at it on my computer and it was absolutely ACE. I then mounted on my garage wall thinking I pointed it how I thought it would be best and it was absolutely APPALLING !

I test taped over half the LED's but that didn't really do anything and until I fettled it in the angle it is in now and as you can see from the garden screengrab it's doing a pucker job !

Basically, mount it below the camera and pointing in the same direction and it's ace.

Okay - so after doing more research I can see that I need to spend more for the spec I think I require... So can someone spec me a recording device that I can then add cameras to, the idea being that I can buy 1 or 2 high quality cameras for actual HD footage and then cheaper cameras for movement recongnition and lower resolution where it is not really needed - say for a wide angle shot of the back yard, and high resolution for front door and immediate area. Hopefully I can then build on that system, I just want to get the right recorder to start with, if I said 1080p at 30 fps on 2 channels and the other 2 channels be rated lower.

I never realised how much there is to actually know about these systems so I hope someone can point me the right way forward.

Regards
Scotty

I have the Hikvision DS-7608 NVR, paired with their DS-2CD2032-I 3MP HD 1080P IP, cameras. Reasonable price and nice quality.
I bought them from aliexpress which is significantly cheaper than getting them from the uk
