At home of course :p
Hi all,

My A-Class which I've had for 8 years now needs a new clutch and some other bits done so I think the time has come to sell it. I'm looking for a new car that is similar (i.e not a saloon e.t.c). I'm prepared to buy new, but thinking of trying to pick one up thats say a year old as then I still get some manufactrers warranty while saving money on the new price.

I'm currently compiling a list of cars to look at in the showroom but any suggestions you can give will be greatly appreciated. So far I've thought of;

a) Honda Civic
b) Ford Fiesta (the new shape has just come out last month, so the dealers must be keen to flog their "new" old shape cars at a discount.

Any further suggestions would be good. I'm not looking for something sporty. Fuel Economy needs to be reasonable (nothing below 40mpg combined). Auto or semi-auto is good (I've never liked manuals), and I'm tempted to get a petrol this time round too.

So - spec me a car :)

Why not just get a new clutch?

Edit: beaten by Tea dubya' Fox for hanging around too long before clicking Post reply :(

Quote I've had is £1300 - the car is 10 years old now (T reg) so I'm not sure it's worth it :)

£1300 to change a clutch? They're 'aving a giraffe, surely? I'd expect to cost at least half that

Well, the A-Class isn't the easiest car to work with. The garage i took it to have always been very good and reasonable with their rates. I actually have the ACS model (automatic clutch system) so this may be the reason it costs more, but a lot of the quote is labour. Think they said the parts were 300 ish and the rest labour.

Looking on parkers, the car is worth 1.5 to 2k so spending a lot on the car isn't an option. The car is still drivable and I can part exchange it at a dealer.

This is from a specialist - not merc.

If it's a decent car and you still like it why not repair it? Why is everyone so hung up on its value? It's value is irrelevent unless you WANT to sell it. And besides, spending £1300 on a clutch (I am convinced you can get it done for half that) is cheaper than spending £7000 on a replacement car.

Don't get so hung up about its value.

^^ What he said, you know the car and it's history, that alone is worth sticking with it through most things imo.

Get some more quotes for the clutch and see if it's a true representation of the cost, but even then I'd still do the clutch rather than the 'hassle' and expense of getting something else, unless of course you just want something else for the sake of something else?

Thanks for this. To be honest i've had the car for 8 years now and I think it's time for a change. This was simply the final straw. I'm sure I can get it cheaper if I shop around, but it's still a big repair bill and i've decided it's time to change.

I'd appreciate it if we could keep this on topic and get some suggestions going rather than persuade me to keep it. :)

Now we know you fancy a change thats fine - if you didnt fancy a change, changing it simply because the bill was 50% of its value was the wrong move. But, if you've got the itch, scratch it.

But change it for something decent. A 1 year old Fiesta is really rather hopelessly generic, it certainly wont give you £5000 more pleasure than your A Class.
