Hi there,

I am in need of a server to run Microsoft Windows Server 2003. It doesn't need to be overly powerful, it's only going to host accounts for 3 or 4 PCs. It may get used for hosting some database applications so may need 1 or 2 GB of RAM.

It also needs to have a decent amount of storage space, mirrored RAID HDDs.

Not sure if the case and PSU will be up to the job, it's currently got an old 2.8P4 in it, one of the earlier ones.

I'm not sure if AMD or Intel would be the right way to go for this.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Overall budget £400 max, but ideally as low as possible.

Dave

Sorry, should have said about HDD space.

500GB is fine, probably the ideal actually.

Cheers for your spec!

No problem... that should easily deal with DB and authentication no problem, and the DS3 supports RAID as well...

Stelly's spec needs a GFX.

How about...

Old PSU might not be compatible i.e. ATX 2.x. Might as well get one with a nice new, shiny case ;)

I think the old server may have a PCI graphics, but I'll have to check back on that one, and Stelly's spec's got a PSU in it.

Can't see what image you've posted as it's blocked at work.

Is there anything special about the motherboard that makes it so expensive? As would one that's £40 less do the same job if it's got RAD and SATA?

I wouldn't trust a PSU from a company I've never heard of, aka Huntkey.

And there is absolutly no reason to use a full on DS3 for the mobo....something much cheaper will due the job just fine.

What is best for PSUs these days? Would the one with the Antec be okay / enough to run that spec 24/7?

A couple of years ago I bought a refurbished Dell Optiplex GX270 for ~£250
It had:

P4 2.8GHz
2x512MB DDR PC3200
320GB IDE HDD

GX270 are semi SFF so the PSU is small and low wattage, meaning I don't worry about leaving it on all the time.

It runs Windows Server 2003 and has been running fine ever since. Just a suggestion anyway
