hi all i am wanting to build a server for hosting games on cod4 (hopefully!) on linux, hosting files over the network and maybe a webserver
i will use ubuntu server edition
here is a pic of the specs i have chose
screenshothi3.png

is there anything i will need (or dont need?)
it will be hosted at home and i would like it to be silent if possible
are any of the components ott?
do i need any better ones?
thanks

Well i'd say its all OTT for a server, but you're hosting a game so maybe not. Otherwise it's fine, does that PSU fit in that case?

To give you some idea on specs - my webserver/gateway/vpn is a dual PIII 1.4 with 1Gb Ram, the VMWARE/Windows server host is a dual 1.4Ghz PIII with 1.5GB RAM and my fileserver is a 1.33Ghz Athlon.

Load averages are usually around 0.00 most of the time. (again i don't know how intensive COD4 is to run as a server)

As a general rule, small cases are really bad for servers - since theyre generally on all the time you need good ventilation to keep the heat down and keep the lifetime of the components as long as possible, i'd go for a large case if thats possible (obviously if it's going to be in your eyesight most of the time you don't want some huge monstrosity)

To be honest, for a home linux server box, thats over specified by a fair bit. I'd drop the processor down a bit, choose a cheaper motherboard (surely you don't need to spend £90 for a basic motherboard) and spend the money saved on a second hard drive running in RAID1.

Just my 2p

I wouldn't really be looking for as small a case as possible if I was looking to make it as silent as possible. Bigger cases allow for more options when it comes to cooling because they offer you flexibility of where you'll route your cables, where you'll position your components, etc...

I've got an Antec P182 Special Edition and it allows me to route the power cables behind the mobo and coming around just by where they're plugged-in, thereby not restricting the air flow from my fans. It also has a separate compartment for the PSU at the bottom of the case, which seems to hemp minimise noise.

I'd also question having a single HDD... there'll potentially be lots of disc access, so having 2 HDDs would be more efficient when reading/writing large amounts than having one drive that gets thrashed a lot.

As others have said, I doubt you really need such a powerful CPU. Have a look at what spec the game hosting companies offer to see what you should be running... I doubt they're running the sort of CPU you've chosen.

Anyway, I'm not really a hardware guy... post back when you're doing the software stuff.

If you are only hosting 1 game server, then that is overkill.
Do you have a decent connection? because you will need a decent upstream rate for hosting any gameserver. If you are on normal ADSL (512k upload) then you will probably be able to host an 8 man server max (guesstimate).

This spec is too much for a game/web server. I remember when I was working for a big games cafe I was running many dedicated counter strike source servers on a pentium chip.

I would personally spend for a server on storage (mirror), RAM and a quality PSU to keep everything safe. The rest as cheap as possible since a web server will most probably use 1% cpu (when someone visits :p) and any home-like connection will max out before the cheapest CPU comes to its knees.

i think the psu will fit in the case?
can some people link me to some more suitible options then step it up by one ;) i chose the cheapest 4nm cpu to keep temps down
i deffo want a small case
i dont have a clue what motherboard but there is little choice when it comes to micro atx
and i will look into raid hdd's

The 45nm CPUs aren't all that special for temps, I'd bet an E2180 would run cooler and should be plenty fast enough, it's also half the price. It'd also rid you of finding a motherboard with support for the newer chips. I'd drop the RAM to 2GB unless you really need it too.

ok i specked it down to a
Enermax EG285-SX-VB(G) 285W Micro ATX Power Supply
1 tb samsung spin point
e2200 conroe 2.2ghz
Asus P5K-VM Intel G33 Micro ATX (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Silverstone Sugo SG01 Evolution Aluminium Micro-ATX Case - Black
total is £370
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Dual Channel Kit

That should do it really I would think, you don't need the matx power supply though, as I recall the case will take a normal ATX.

ok updated the specs to this
screenshotsn4.png

but i have replaced the 280 micro atx psu with a Enermax Pro 82+ 385W EPR385AWT ATXv2.3 Silent PSU
i will be keeping it in a large cupboard in my room

I'm still in 2 minds about having one single HDD, but other than that I can't think of anything else.

Presumably you've already got a monitor, keyboard & mouse that can be used..?

no i will get a cheap roll up keyboard and mouse but i am hunting for a really cheap tft flatscreen (don't care about size or quality as it will be running text based interface)

ooooh feel free to email me a link if you see any :)
i will have 1tb space first (bro's chipping in 50 quid so he gets 500 gig) and if i feel acess is to slow ill raid it up

I haven't been buying screens for ages, but that was in bulk lot/untested/without power supplies type auctions.

Most of them simply require a 12v supply which i can do off a hot wired ATX supply. Tested and with PSU, you're not going to see one for much less than £50
