Budget is about £2000 and I already have:

OS
Keyboard
Mouse
Monitor (1900x1200)
Speakers

I'll be using it for gaming, video editing, work (so using office, the internet etc), file storage including moving fairly large files around, watching dvds listening to music etc... I'm basically looking for a silent and fast system it doesn't need wireless internet, would be good to have a 1/4 inch headphone socket on the front too.

I haven't been keeping up to date for about a year so I'm looking for ideas to help my research. From what little I have read I have a few questions:

Should I go for i7?
Is it worth getting an SSD OS drive?

Yes you should go for i7
not sure about SSD, theyre still fairly new technology and in their infancy, the WD Caviar Greens are reportedly pretty quiet
If you get a decent quiet case, prob Lian Li, a quiet PSU like Zalman, and for quiet Id recomend the Nvidia gfx cards (prob a 285) as I know from my experience the ATI arent particuarly quiet (unless youre happy fitting an aftermarket cooler - but it voids any warranty) that should make for quiet system
you could look at WC if youre happy with it

I was just looking at the i7's and was wandering what real world difference the 4.8GTs QuickPath of the 920 and 940 would make compared to the 6.4GTs QuickPath of the 965? Also is the i7 aka bloomfield? How long until new processors are released?

Are the X58 mobos the ones to go for? Mobo's are quite expensive these days!

How about...

Does that SSD have the stuttering problems or have ocz corrected this?

I like corsair but I was thinking of going for the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W as it's cheaper and supposely a very decent unit.

The mobo, cpu, ram, cpu cooler I agree with. May go for an akasa case and samsung f1 harddrives. Is the 4870x2 much better than the 285? Anyone know how they compare in terms of power consumption and noise?

PC P&C PSU is very good, go for it
the WD Caviar Greens are quieter than the samsungs
the 4870X2 is better but as I said before for quietness Id go with a 285
