Spec me a soft mattress

I've always preferred firmer mattresses to sleep on, but recently I slept in a bed with a soft mattress and I found that I got to sleep much more quickly and slept better. I forgot to get the details of the mattress while I was there and they haven't responded to my email so I turn to OCUK. Spec me one! King size. Budget can be substantial; I can afford to not stint but I can't afford silly money. Also, how do I test the mattress? I much prefer laying on a firm one, but as I've just found, sleep is a different matter.

There's an earlier thread from 2011 here, do the recommendations there still hold?

You can buy softer mattress toppers but you may need deeper fitted sheets to do this. Keeps the firmer mattress but adds a degree of comfort.

any mattress that comes rolled up will start sagging. Their warranties are a gimmick/ non existent (the mattress needs to sag/dip at least 4cm with no pressure applied for them to replace it - almost impossible as they all return close to their original shape even when they lost all support)

Me 90kg, wife 75kg
Had a tempur original - lasted 8 years then dipped at lower back 2cm
Nectar - 3 years sagging 3cm
Simba single 2 years 2cm (kids bedroom 30kg bodyweight)

all had homeserve inspections stating although support in the lower back area has diminished it does not meet the 4cm sagging criteria for a warranty replacement .

Now we have a John Ryan, 18 months old so far so good and no sagging..

Also beware most Trustpilot reviews are for short term use . They are all great for the first few months and then fail miserably

8 years is not bad surely?

Not at all, but that was a £1K Mattress

just listed all the mattresses we went through over the years for comparison and highlighting that the warranty is a gimmick
As you're keen on getting the ruler out probs worth it for you to buy a mattress with stricter warranty tolerances? If -1cm dip warranties aren't common place then you can't really say they're gimmicky.

Fwiw I have had a leesa 4yrs, rotate it frequently per manufacturer guidance and may have some dip but nothing I'd be aware of without getting the ruler out.

I do have a mattress topper - a very thin thing more like an underblanket. It seems I'd be wanting a feather mattress topper but one site I read said they require nightly fluffing; I'd have to strip the bed every day.

The problem is they snap back to their original shape even after they lost all support.
On the Nectar mattress we had you would sink in 10cm at the hip as it lost all its support but then snap back to its original shape only leaving a cm static dip.

The homeserve guy puts a string across the mattress and measures the static sag/dip WITHOUT any pressure applied and openly stated they are not fit for purpose but they have to test to the manufacturers instructions.

I would get a coil sprung mattress rather than a foam one. You can get ones that are pretty soft and bouncy. Bensons for Beds might be worth a visit. There's a list of shops and brands for mattresses here.

Or memory foam?

Yeah you can get thick memory foam toppers, this one is 7cm, for example.. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/1156379

Not cheap though - might be worth a look if your current matress is still good, as it's a fair bit cheaper than a whole new matress.

As said above, if you go for a thick one, you might need deeper fitted sheets also as they can add a fair bit of height.

I've had my mattress perhaps 20 years and it's still going strong. I bought a really firm one. But a soft topper seems a reasonable trial. My only concern is that I have fitted sheets so there might be an issue there. We'll see.

Ooh, they have a store in Aberdeen. A visit is in order! I need the exercise anyway. :)

I've had an Emma matress original coming on 2 years. no sagging and comfy.
I just rotate every month or two.
