hi guys

i need a inventory management software to track 500+ PC's for software, must be freeware/open source.

if possible do 'live' tracking everytime the machine is booting up would be even better.

cheers

had a play with spiceworks, i like it but scan sometimes doesnt pick PC's at all. is there any agent client inventory software?

thanks again

Spiceworks could be so good if it did things a little better/streamlined

If spiceworks doesn't take your fancy have a look as Easy Audit.

I've used OCS-NG before to carry out a hardware/software inventory of all computers. Its open source and can be combined with GLPI (also open source) to get more reports.

OCS-NG is bloody good, very very easy but one very little problem, let say if i need to find machines that still running IE7, i need to see the machines that got IE7 listing then i'll know which machines needs to be updating to IE8, make sense?

at the moment, i have to click/open EACH machine to see what software/verison it's running which is very annoying.

thanks

for example -

if i click all computers icon, it would give me the list of machines that got agent installed.

now....if i click all software icon, it would give me all software installed on all machines.

as you can see, if i click mozilla firefox, it wont tell me WHICH machines is that one. make sense?

thanks

GLPI may be able to take the OCS-NG database and give you more detailed info and reports - but I haven't looked into it. Been a while since I've played with OCS-NG but would you be able to create your own report using a SQL query?

Just a couple of ideas - not ideal but may get you the information you want :)

I've started using glpi (manual import from irm). very impressive, can even tie which licence key is assigned to which pc - very useful for oem etc.

http://www.lansweeper.com/ is quite useful, has agent you can push out via scripts etc, a new web interface and its SQL back-end so you can easily create your own reports.

Fair few add-ons available too.

I have tried\used all that have been mentioned and they pretty much do the same thing its just what 'feels' best, so try a couple :)

This might be useful for me. We used to be small enough that i could just keep track of computers and what is installed on paper - but this could make my life easier.
