Spec me a SSD

Hi guys,

It's payday Friday and I want upgrade my outdated sata II hard drive.

I have done some research but I am still somewhat confused on what the best to buy for what I am going to use it for.

I don't do any video rendering nor photoshop.

I play games and that's it.

I have 150 pound as my budget.

Any help would be great.
 
How many games (size wise?)

Would allow a good few games (would it just be used for games, or os etc?)

Alternatively you could get

as a large games drive (500gb is £68 but out of stock)

Many thanks I can get away with a 120, I take it once formatted ill lost about 10gb?

Also does it matter that that Samsung has such a low write speed?

I would recommend the Samsung 256gb 840Proif you can get the extra £30. Well worth it mate.
 
If you are only going to be storing games on it and not using it for video/photo editing, read speeds will be the most important. When loading games etc, the write speed won't matter other than game saves.

The standard 840 should be sufficient for those needs. Also, check the read/write speeds of the different capacity drives as they vary by capacity
 
Going with the 128GB Samsung 840 PRO you'd have about 119GB as well :p

Same price, Samsung has higher max. write and 10MB/sec lower max read
 
Samsung 840 250GB (non pro).

Slow write speeds ? It's write speed is faster than my old Intel X25 80GB's read speed, and that was a fast drive !

"Only" 3 years warranty ? I think we can live with that, and the money saved over the "PRO" version can be used towards a new SSD if the "non pro" fails after 3 years.

I`ve been running an 840 250GB since January, and compared to the old 830s and the Crucial M4s that I`ve installed, it certainly doesn't seem like the "cheap option" (unless I benchmark it).
 
My new 840 250g benches slightly faster than my M4 128g and significantly faster than my X25 80g ssd - that said, in general use they are all bloody fast. For the price and capacity - the 840 250g is hard to ignore

Hard to ignore ? It's my current "go to" SSD for upgrades that I carry out.
 
Ive just bought a 500GB 840. Higher write speed than the 250GB and better lifespan. Can be had for a bit over £200 with some shopping around and the Samsung cashback.

That's what I would go for too. I paid £280 for Crucial 512 M4 about 4 months ago and it is the single best thing I've done to my MBP. I wouldn't have gain any benefits getting anything faster with the Sata II 3G bandwidth limit anyway but £200 for 500G SSD? I would've snapped your hands off !
