Spec me a sub £750 55" tv

Hi all,

I'm looking at replacing my old 47" LG LM760T but I'm completely out of tune on what's good a what's not. I have a budget up to a maximum of £750 to replace it with a good all round 55" set. The TV will be my main set so will be used for a bit of everything from my kids watching their stuff, to watching films, and some gaming on my PS4.

Can anyone recommend some sets that are worth shortlisting please?

There is only one set that comes to mind at the price and it's the 55XF9005 Sony. This set is a top range Full array and blow all other TVs around that price out the water.

Thanks. I've been looking at that set, but a little put off by the Android OS as I've read it's not the best. Also I'd prefer HDMI 2.1 ports, but that limits my options.

Have been looking at the LG SM9010

Also full array, HDMI 2.1, and the nicer LG WEB OS. Can pick one up for £720, just trying to find some decent reviews to see how it compares

LG full array just doesn't work. All the TVs offer major light bleed and random bright spots. The android os is not so bad once updated. The xf9005 is the better TV hands down.

You can get the 55" Sony 55XF9005 over on AO for £720 at the moment with the SONY10 code.

Thanks again for the info. The Sony is tempting, but I'm struggling to see past the Android OS and high input lag. Will do some more reading in that model

Yeah seen that, but Richer Sounds are doing it for the same price with a 6yr warranty

I'd probably wait for some deals on a q80r for its better viewing angle and processor (than xf sony); if you are viewing at night time, the limited ~50 zones on sony will not look brilliant, and in lighter viewing, zones are not so important,
alternative for me are older fx750 panasonics good viewing angle + build nearer £500

The Android os is the worst thing about the Sony. It takes so long for the tv to boot up to a usable state it’s incredibly annoying. The picture quality is great but the LG os is far better.

Mine takes a few seconds I also have an LG too to compare and whilst it is slower it's not a big enough deal for me to spend £50 on a 4k fire TV or a chromecast.

So I sold my 4k fire TV when I got the TV.

It depends on the TV and if its running latest firmware. The Sony has had lots of os improvements in the past year

So I sold my 4k fire TV when I got the TV.

It depends on the TV and if its running latest firmware. The Sony has had lots of os improvements in the past year

It’s fine if you leave the tv on standby but I turn it off at the wall every night and to restart it takes forever, as in I could easily make a of tea before the tv is responsive enough to change a channel. Latest firmware has been applied. It’s not a dealbreaker it’s just really annoying.

What would fire tv or chrome cast do that the tv doesn’t already do?

Be faster. They are dedicated smart TV hardware not an add on

Thanks for the info guys. I've no doubt the xf9005 is a great TV, and at my budget a great option, but I'm just not convinced it'll be the right choice for me. I'm liking the look of the Q80R, just need to see if it drops in price any more as ideally I don't want to spend £850+

So looking around I can pick up a new Samsung Q55Q80R for £825. Can anybody see these dropping in price any more than that? I see a lot of places are out of stock so don't want to wait too long and find I can't get it anymore.

Wouldn’t solve my issue though the tv is fine during normal use it’s just the slow boot up that annoys me.

but there are still negative comments on hotuk. otherise the 49" xg at ~£650 looked interesting

Not sure if the 49” got the newer processor I remember reading something somewhere.

Well, I've pulled the trigger on the 55" Samsung Q80R. Works out at £825 after cashback, so not too much over budget. Will be getting delivered on Friday. I'm looking forward to seeing how much better it is than my old LG that set me back £1200 8yrs ago

Ended up cancelling my order for the Samsung in the end and instead yesterday I picked up an 18 month old 55" LG C8 OLED with the remainder of the 5yr John Lewis warranty for £700 :cool:

Bought it from a seller over on avforums and it spotless and the picture is stunning.

I'd never thought about getting a warrantied used set before, but the chance to get a great OLED at a good price was just too tempting.
