Spec me a switch?

Just had a rewire done, have 12 data points around the house with cat 6 running to the under stairs cupboard. There’s a shelf that’s 600mm wide, 230mm deep and there’s space for maybe a 50mm high box.

Anyone recommend a POE+ or ++ switch that won’t exceed the space available? I can find 12 port switches that almost cover my needs but are too deep, or a 16 port Netgear one (the GS316PP) that fits the space, POE++ requirements but has 16 ports meaning wasted capacity.

Could two switches work instead of one larger one? Just for example, the Zyxel XMG1915-10EP 8-Port Smart 2.5GbE PoE++ Access Switch. It is 250 x 104 x 27 mm. So in theory pop two side by side on your shelf and use the 10G SFP+ slot.

I would not worry about a particular brand as long as it is Gigabit. The suggestion of two (one Poe) makes sense especially in terms of keeping costs down.

You say you need 12 now but for future proofing, it would be wise to get a slightly bigger switch. Empty ports will not use more electricity.

Also. Fan or fanless? What’s ventilation like in the cupboard?

This is what I did for my 10" cab - Zyxel XMG-105HP and Zyxel XMG-105 linked via a short DAC.

Fanless would be ideal, the top shelf in the cupboard extends the full width available due to the triangular shape of the space. It’s not airtight in there but it’s under the stairs so ventilation is negligible.

The router will be in the living room next to the Openreach fibre box, but the remaining shelf space is food storage. I don’t do a lot of heavy upload/download, gigabit will probably do it but 2.5 would be a nice bonus.

Two switches might work if I can park a 2-way extension in there, mainly because although there are two sockets I was planning on parking a NAS under there.

I wouldn't be upset about buying a 16-port switch if I only needed 12 ports
