I'm looking for a gen 3 MB, i have a case i can reuse, and also can reuse my windows 7 retail which is on this old system (q6600) thats very unstable, just given up trying to fix it.
So what i have atm is :-
monitor Asus VG278H 27"
case full tower LANLI
microsoft side winder x8 wireless mouse usb
microsoft wireless desktop elite PS2 keyboard
windows 7 ultimate retail

I think i will be doing some video encoding so i need a i7 cpu, 8gb ram, gen 3 MB, harddrive, and dvdrw burner, PSU, and a nvidia card of some sort, i wanna do some 3D gaming since i have a nice 120hz asus monitor, looks like i will be needing a heatsink and fan the retail cpu don't come with them now it looks like it.
Got around 1000 pound to spend can go over if needed.
Need to get order in today, i wanna build this new system at weekend.

1 x OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £17.99
Total : £992.47 (includes shipping : £10.50).

  1. 16GB might be beneficial for video encoding.
  2. Retail CPUs do come with a heatsink (except the socket 2011 i7 CPUs), but I've included a heatsink anyway so you can get a decent overclock
  3. A good SSD + plenty of storage
  4. Decent modular PSU
  5. Great GPU for the price. It's pre order but you could use the onboard GPU until you get it? Just an idea

I assume by "full tower Lian Li" that it is an ATX sized case? What model is it? Need to check the cooler would fit, for instance.

looks like a nice MB Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-GEN3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
but lookin at the Tech Spec theres no sign if its pci 3.0

As for the Lian Li case its old now, that old i can't remember the modal of it, this is going to be its third system installed in it since i bought it years and years back, i can say it as got a P5k-e wifi motherboard in it atm if that helps.

MSI GeForce GTX 570 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £269.99
Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £233.99
Corsair Professional Series AX750 High Performance 750W Modular '80 Plus Gold' Power Supply (CMPSU-750AXUK) £149.99
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD1002FAEX) £127.99
Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-GEN3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £122.98
Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-15000C9 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMZ8GX3M2A1866C9) £53.99
Thermalright Venomous X Silent CPU Cooler (Socket 775/1156/1155/1366/AM2) £41.99

I've bumped up the video card spec and drop the SSD for now, and gone for a bigger PSU. Can you check see all this lot would work fine?

• Gen3 board
• 8pin cable extension just in case;)

yes i will be doing encoding so must put my foot down on the i7
and i do like the Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-GEN3 MB it as esata which will come in handy and it as PS2.
But all the spec i put together will it be ok?

yes i was going to wait but this system will not its doing random shut downs and its almost 5 years old now its not worth trying to fix it.

The RAM is too tall for the heatsink fan to clear over the top.

1600Mhz RAM is the sweat spot as performance doesnt increase much with higher frequency.

£130 for a 1TB HDD is madness.

750W isnt enough if you wanted to add a second GTX480's in SLI (needs 850w+) for the GTX570's in SLI it is OK.

IF you stick a i7 2600 in the build I did it comes to £1059, less if you use a GTX480.

ok some more juggling around

I think that looks about right now i have got 2 other 2TB slaves i need to install when the system as been built so more power is better and i don't think i will be SLI in the future, so does that spec look ok now?

btw total cost Total : £989.50
