Spec me a tall but small SUV

Qashqai is pretty much the smallest “SUV” you can get, so if it’s too big then he’s really limited in options (the Qashqai is the same size as a Golf Hatch).
Trying to get him to just drive one, it's probably the best option but he's a funny old fella and will mull over it for weeks and then plump for something completely different.

SUV or 4x4? There are plenty smaller SUVs. Even Nissan make one.

I wouldn’t call the Qashqui a 4x4 (even though it can come with AWD). :p

Point was it’s a pretty small vehicle, although I guess if they are coming from a fiesta then they may consider it to be too “big”.

Canada. They probably never see anything smaller than a VW Golf there :D:D:D

Pretty much over here. I’ve been discussing with the GF about getting a small city car for her commute. My idea of small (fiesta) is different to her idea of small (VW Golf estate)...:D

I saw a Canadian registered Honda Civic over here, I remember thinking that of all the wonderful cars you could buy in Canada to do a road trip like that, a Honda Civic has to be pretty much the worst.

I'd have to be another to put the Skoda Yeti forward. A mate has one and they're top notch. Proper tough little motor and it's surprisingly good off-road too, especially on wet grass slopes.

For £10k? Where?

Fair point. hadn't noticed the budget the OP stated.

Most of the german VAG (Seat, Skoda, VW , Audi) group smaller SUV's are very new so you won't be able to get any of them for £10k unfortunately.

Other option might be to go for something slightly larger like a Tiguan/Q3. I've always thought the Kia Sportage looked pretty nice as well.

As other posted have stated the Qashqai seems like it would be worth a look aswell. Size wise it's about the same as a Golf/Focus so slightly larger than their current fiesta but not a massive jump really.

. Rather have a Hyundai or Kia over a Citroen or Peugeot
IX20? About Fiesta sized but taller so fits his small but tall bill.

If he hates French cars so much but is considering a Qashqai, don't forget to tell him that Nissan and Renault are in bed together so he's almost buying a Kadjar :D

Yeti is a great shout and we're considering one for her next car, but the seating position isn't as high as it might appear, so get him (or rather your mum) to try it first.

Vauxhall Agila

mate of mine had a new knee last year and he agrees with you on that.

op- why not go for a "proper" off roader? something like a 3 door shogun, that way at least it's got a different kind of motoring appeal rather than being purely a practical box on wheels.

that is assuming running costs and fuel usage aren't a big concern to him (which being a petrolhead i'd presume he's used to)

We are still very pleased with our Kia Sportage. It's not massively bigger than our old hatchback, mainly the height and it doesn't take too long to learn the handling compared to a normal car. In fact I'm quite addicted to the heavier driving feel and looking forward to longer trips in the summer.

It also comes with a 7 year warranty and a 5 year service pack can be purchased quite reasonably.

My main caveat/advice based on experience to date is, if the budget permits, buy one with a rear parking camera/sensor. The height and shape means rear visibility not that brilliant, though possibly something that applies to other SUV's/compact SUV's too.
