Spec me a track toy!

Out of interest, why is timing forbidden at track days here? I know in Japan almost all tracks have timing systems in use on track days with big matrix boards flashing up your lap time when you pass, seems like fun to me. What is the point in doing something if there's no challenge.

I guess it's in an attempt to stop everyone racing round the track at 10/10ths trying to shave another second of their pb.

Makes options such as Porsche's Sport Chrono even more appealing for track oriented cars as there's not a lot they can do to prove you're timing yourself as the timing is controlled using a stork and display in the instrument cluster.

We have chavs, Japan does not

Regarding option.1.:

Worth a re-quote.

A number of times!

Regarding option.2.:
Timing at track-days is a big no no. Racing against the clock at track-days is most likely to result in being kicked off the circuit, at worse perma-banned from the organisers.

My suggestion - enter (or create) a karting championship.
This will satisfy racing against the clock, wheel-to-wheel racing, plenty of circuits & greater control over costs.
I've joined club100 in the past & it was absolutely first rate with some fairly handy drivers, worth a consideration perhaps?

Thanks for that. Very helpful!!!

We are going hillclimbing!

Choosing our cars in secret of course - we have set a budget of £3k for the car + £1k on safety/performance upgrades + a £1k limit on spares/repairs for the course of the year.

328's in budget perhaps a little big to run on the hill, but pretty quick off the line.

Alfa GTV - cool car - probably not too quick though.

Evo II/III - probably the best option - should be pretty reliable and pretty fast? Only problem is 90% of Evo's have been thrashed to death already so I'll probably be buying quite a few spares in the frst few weeks.

All of those seem horrible suggestions for hillclimbing.

Something light, FWD and with a moderate amount of power would be ideal.

Search for a kei car, something like a Suzuki cappuchino.

660cc, strip it, make it mega light, and give it abit of boost. One I read about had 230hp, and goes round tsukuba as fast as a GTR!

if you want to do timing you want to do sprint events (I think MK1 Salami Does these with Vixen ?)

As everyone as said, if you do racing, set a budget, double it, add a bit more, put a 0 on the end, double it again, and you might just about finish the first event. I doubt heavily you even have close to enough budget to race karts competitively there.

Arrive and drive track days are more than enough fun, MX5/e36 gets my vote at that budget

I've just been going through the event result sheets -

Caterhams - 31's.
Evo's -30's & 31's.
106 - 31's

So my plan:
Strip out a 106 and possibly tweak the engine a bit too? Should be done for less than £4k ish?

We didn't know if we could get an event where we race cheaper cars together. Thats seems unlikley - I know how expensive it was to run karts as a teen (I worked to pay for race entry & tyres, Dad worked for the kart, spares, transport)! hence the hillclimb idea...

The reason for the budget is whilst two of us can afford to do this for a little more. The other two can't.

I've just spoken to them and we are going to car share at the hillclimb to spread costs, the budget stays £3k for the car, £1k for mods and we are trying to keep to £1k in spares.

Thanks for your help!

Hillclimb in a BMW is a bad idea, I know someone that does it and he keeps getting his E30 323 stuck on the more rally-esque climbs and doesn't get good times...but has a good time doing it. :p

I'd say something light and with some power, so a FWD car with 150+ bhp would be good, 106, 205 etc. with some mods should do well.

Good plan, although I'd suggest a Saxo VTS instead of a 106 (GTI). Same car, but the Saxo is a fair bit cheaper due to it's Chav appeal.

VTS' can be right little weapons with a bit of money spent on them!
