Spec me a tracking device....

this "device" thinking about it actually has its uses, if you go away onholiday, put it in your bag, if the bag gets stolen you can track it. notlike the thief knows its in there.

*files patent* :p

That's a sweet idea, but why limit it to holidays? Would be very useful assuming it was cheap and small.

One problem:
Connectivity.
How is it going to say where it's position is? It will bump up the price of units quite a bit. Coaches are now fitted with these units, probably cost quite a few bob and I am unsure whether they can even remotely send out their location. If they do, they probably use 3g, or some sort of modulated radio wave.

well if a satnav can do it why cant a gps unit in your bag, with the galaxy note recieving the newest gps chip on the market, form factor and battery life wouldnt bea problem

Can do what? If you are thinking about making a small unit that will allow you to track devices, then it will need to be able to transmit it's location. Which is basically the largest problem with your idea.

i dont understand, it could be a formfactor than contains the chip that most modern day phones contain, and it would work the same as wheres my iphone, through a website

Easier said than done, you would need your own 3g infrastructure or use other networks. I can imagine both of options are quite difficult. I have no idea the amount of data that would need to be transmitted and whether a £30 system could pay for the infrastructure overhead required. You don't really want it to be a subscription model and you also don't want the device to be worth more than the items inside the suitcase.

I have done a fair amount of research into this. I was looking at luggage tracking as part of a campaign a client was running.

main issues are:
connectivity - gprs is fine but you need a sim card
knowing where the device is - gps antenna, fine but that leads on to the last issue
battery life - depending on the frequency of the pings (updating its location) batteries on a small device will really take a pounding.

and after all of that you have the deal breaker for this idea. How do you think airports will react to a suitcase constantly sending out is location. Bomb perhaps?

It's fairly easy to tag someone if you have access to a GPS feed. Should that be from a mobile device or PC as they like to broadcast their address these days !!!

I would imagine that most thieves would discard the bag asap once they had rifled through it to steal valuables ? especially if it was a handbag/small hand luggage.
