Headed round to a friend's house on Saturday, group of 6 of us. He's cooking the main and dessert and we offered to do a starter.

Can anyone recommend something interesting and mildly impressive to bring? We're leaning towards a mackerel pate/terrine with all the accoutrements. Present it nicely in a kilner jar etc.

Don't want to do soup (boring!), I'm guessing something cold is preferable so as to not get in his way in his poky little kitchen. Last time I think we did smoked trout with a celeriac remoulade which went down well.

Any ideas? :)

I was going to say something like a salmon terrine, so yours could be good. Can always line ramekins with cling film and turn them out on the plate to look a bit sexier :p I did a nice one previously, lined them with smoked salmon, and then inside was a salmon and horseradish mouse.
